Who here has reseal a ZF Power Steering Pump?
 

Well mine sprays about an OZ a month so. I may think of rebuilding it to reduce the oil under the hood behind the light. It is a ZF pump.

I have the kit to rebuilt it that I got from Fastlane. He sent me what I need to reseal it. Shaft mechanical seal and a couple of O-ring I believe.

I have been told they are a bear to rebuild if you don't get the vanes back to where they did not come from.

It they are a bear to rebuild and a possible cluster ****, then I will take it to my mechanic who knows MB's and has done some work for me before. I have no special tools to boot. I think you need a special tool just to get the pulley off.

Just curiuos if you all have done this and how hard it can be or should I just pay somebody to do it, if I take it to him.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Is the Rear seal the one behind the Pulley? Mine is leaking there.

My seals are in the mail, too....... from looking at it, I believe the front seal should be fairly easy to replace-BUT I have not done ANY research- so I may be way off.......

do you have the FSM procedure?? email me if you dont.....

Great pictures and write up! I learned allot from the pictures. Would you suggest doing the rear O-ring if it is not leaking or letting it go? That belt adjusting bolt was hidden now I see how it works!

Seems like the shaft Mechanical seal is not hard to do, just use impact wrench to get nut off, and a large wheel puller. Neither of them I have but I can get it done at local shop I believe.

Once the pulley is off does the mechanical seal just pop out?

If I'm doing the mechanical seal only I don't have to break open the pump right?

Now I'm wondering if I need to do the big rear O-ring eventhough it is not what is leaking. Any ideas?

from what I just read- you should measure the didstance that the shaft prtrudes form the pump casing before you start, and after you have pulled the seal- if it is the same, no need to go further.

the seal puller that is listed is not something most would have- but I am sure I'll think of something when the time comes.

Has anyone used the "T" type pullers that autoparts house's carry??

I wonder if you need to apply some sealer on the OD of the mechanical seal? RTV?

I've replaced mechanical seals before and you just carefully pry them out and that tool looks good enough to me to do that. Since I have not done this job I really don't know.

I don't have that tool however, it looks dangerous! lol.

these pullers are great- and under $10 @ moist FLAPS

I have one of those seal pullers, bought it at Harbor freight.

Used it to pull 2 axle seals on my Datsun, worked good. didn`t work so good on the tranny out put shaft.

The tool works good putting on the rubber donuts for the muffler.

I did not have a seal puller but managed to get the front seal out with a sharp screwdriver.
New seal went back in with a large socket and a few taps of a hammer.
I did not replace the o-rings.

My main bearing in my ZF model power steering pump broke up and caused all the oil to leak. Here are the parts i needed to repair the pump, which is pretty simple and less expensive than replacing it.
SKF 6004JEM $15.21
Torrington/Timken Needle bearing HK1612B $6.57
Main seal Chicago Rawhide 7952 $3.33
O- rings Opac 01 146 (pack of 10) $5.00

I bought all of these from http://www.applied.com . The o- rings are a Applied part #. The bearings are industries #s 6004 and 1612.
I initially bought the seal online $7.50 and the seal kit $3.00. The seal kit came with only one big o-ring(you need two) and some other parts not used on the pump, the seal came damaged, not worth it to ship back.

I pulled the pump. I had a working spare I got from a member here. So if I screwed up I could still drive car.

I took pump to Auto Zone and used their 3 jar wheel puller. Fellow let me do it at the store. Nice guy to let me use his bench.

Had to go nice and slow, and tap end of wheel puller as I went to shock it loose. Repositioned jaws a bunch of time.

POP, it came off.

Brought pump home and installed new seal, shaft looked ok. Very delicate pump so I wanted to go slow and get it installed. I did not do the big O-ring I just did the small shaft seal.

Working fine now.

On the front of my pump, the seal was a bear to get out.
I ended up drilling a couple small holes and removing it with a small slide hammer screwed into it, as I didn't want to tear the whole thing down. (I hadn't ordered the seals to reinstall the back cover.)

Once I did finally extract it and installed a new one, I've had no problems with leakage since.

i resealed a ZF this winter. Got it out of the car and back in in about an hour. This is a very easy job! Your vanes will probably fall out and are direction specific. Use your minds people! The vanes go machined side out!
