Transmission data plug removal on 772.608

Any tips on removal/replacement of the data plug on the 98 E300.
This winter has done a number on the two old O rings on the existing plug and it has been leaking at low temps.
I just got the new replacement plug + O rings. I have never replaced it before and there is nothing in the DIY section. Is it just press fit into the trans housing? What does the white colar with the thumb flange do? Not sure what postion the colar should be in for removal or replacement.?

Thanks for the link to the pictures. Interesting that all the searching I did for the plug adapter did not say anything about the additional need for the red O ring on the plug itself which is shown in these pixs. So I need to get a replacement O ring seal for the plug before I start pulling everything apart.
It looks like the Thumb flange on the ivory/white bezel is down to unlock the plug and up to lock. At least it gave me a visual of what I am dealing with.
Thanks again!

If you go to post #41 in the thread I provided, you'll read that the red o-ring doesn't have to be replaced.

The red o-ring does nothing to seal the ATF in the pan. It's function is to keep outside road debris from getting into the connection. In other words, if your data plug is leaking, replacing the red o-ring won't stop it.

The black plug with the red o-ring fits into the part that has two o-rings. This part with the two o-rings is the one to be replaced..

This link shows the part that is replaced due to the leaking ATF:
