Oil Dip Stick Blew Off 98

Hello,

My dip stick blew off and shot a decent amount of oil in the engine compartment one cold day last week. I zip tied it down and now there is some leaking out of the tube that leads to the valve on the top of the crank case.

The valve and the tubes are not blocked.

At idle I can feel a decent amount of pressure comming from the engine if open the oil cap and put my I put my hand over it. There are also little puffs of very light smoke.

How is the vent suppose to work? I can blow through it easily both ways. is is a one way valve?

I'm having trouple finding related post could someone provide the simple things to check or a good link for trouble shooting. What is typically the problem in this case? This also happened on my friends 98 606 w210

Thanks for your help.
Jay

Under the valve cover-cover there is a crankcase ventilation system. It runs from the back of the motor through a oil separator to the front...I would bet it is clogged and causing a buildup of crankcase pressure.

Did you put a new o-ring on the dipstick?

Hello,

Are you talking about the black plastic tubing and the puck which I'm assuming is the seperator which thought was some type of valve? Are they are the parts under the valve cover - cover that you are talking about? Those are all clear I can blow or see through all of the components. I can even blow easily back towards the intake. The engine pressure seems higher than it can handle under moderate acceleration. Any thing else I can check?

Thanks,
Jay

I agree with nhdoc....something is interfering with the positive crankcase vent system. Plus you have stated that there is some tell tale smoke.

The black tube coming out the front driver side of the valve cover runs to the turbo intake housing. I would guess that the oil galleys in the head under the valve cover may be slightly clogged and are causing the valve cover to be flooded out with oil. The cold temperature is aggrevading the situation and slowing down the drain back of oil pumped into the valve cover and over taxing the oil seperator for the PCV system.

You can try cleaning the drain back holes/ oil galleys under the valve cover with a guitar string (low E which is wrapped with brass). You use it like a long pipe cleaner and run it as far down the oil return holes as you can. It will nock off some of the tarnish and gunk that is restricting the return of the oil to the sump from the valve cover. The brass winding on the guitar string is softer that the engine alloy so it will not damage it. Then after running the engine to operating temp.....change the oil to remove some of the debris that settles into the oil pan. It cannot hurt to do this maintenance.....I have done this on several of my vehicles but not my 98 E300.
Hope it helps!

F18: Would you just put the string in through the hole in the vent hole in the rear passengers side of the valve cover and just wiggle it around a lot in there?

Does someone have an assembly drawing so I can visualize what I'm cleaning under the valve cover?

Thanks,
Jay
