ON TOPIC:
Aren't the late nineties MB cars that we should stay away from? They have the self destructing wiring harnesses for one thing. I would stick with the W126. If you want a more refined car, look for a nice clean SDL.

I think all the new Benz's look like the size of Honda's.I don't like crawling down into a car.

You'll wish you had your 300SD back when the first repairs for that S500 come around....the W140 is a whole different world of expenses and repairs compared to a W126...

Hah, that's funny. I bought my 83 SD from a guy that was replacing it with an S500.

You can spend $3000 a year on maintenance rather easily on a w140; if the previous owner hadn't done everything perfectly, you may find you're out $4000-$5000 in the first six months. I love the body style, and I love the car, but I would never buy something that would cost so much damn money to keep moving when there are so many better/cheaper alternatives out there.

Problem: either my 2001 CLK430 (rarely driven) or my beloved 85 300SD must go! The CLK has only 67k, and I don't drive it much. Fun car though.

Anyone got first hand knowledge of these w140 S500s. Please scare me away!
I'd be in @ 77K miles......but not @ 177K. That, would scare me away. (Even though they are very nice/impressive cars)

I think you can do better than that, on an even newer S-Class, for a few bucks more, and a lot less miles.

Good move...a W140 is a an endless pit which sucks dry the wallets of many. Words of wisdom.

It will take Will Power to pass on it.

However, if you keep having the hots for a car like that, I think Brian Carlton nailed it. Get a pre-owned BMW 740.
