Power stroke VS 6 cyl mercedes Bnz
I have a 97 power stroke and the smell of diesel smog is tolerable, but in my 92 300SD 6 cyl, the smell of a smog diesel is realy bad, even do I had rebuild the engine recently, the smell still bad. I don't know if any smog control on the turbo is going bad or is this is normal. by the way what is the job of the EGR.

Diesels naturally have smelly exhaust and each engine type has a unique smell. Nothing will change it except biodiesel.
The EGR's job is to occupy space on the engine and increase the vehicle weight by 1lb. |

I've always thought that the exhaust smell from the Ford Diesels (especially the powersmokes....) is a horrid smell....way worse than pretty much any other diesel I've come across. Don't know why, but they just smell horrible. Must be the way they burn the fuel or something.

I agree. The Powerchokes seem to have a unique smell, almost metallic. Only the Duralax has come close to matching it to my nose.

I agree, When I was in the Army, I could, by smell, identify what vehicle it was that I was smelling. Either a Detroit 6V53 (APC), Cummins 8.3L inline 6 (5 TON), Cummins VTA903T(BRADLEY), GM 6.2(CUCV, or HMMWV), Hercules inline 6(DEUCE / HALF), or even the turbine engine on an M1 Abrams, it too burns JP8. The M1 smelled to me like an earthy burned vegetable smell, as if you lit 10 tons of potatoes on fire. Moral of the story is, as long as you are running Petro diesel, your smog will never go away. As I am typing this I am drinking a McDonalds Shamrock Shake, it tastes like Immodium AD, diareeaha medicine. CRAP!!!

i think it has something to do with the lower compression ratio on newer diesels. and the regeneration cycle system as well.

Yeah, the duralax is also probably the closest I've smelled to the fords.....similar, but not quite as unpleasant.....

Am I the only one that likes the smell of a diesel? I kinda like it. The older ones on a cold start! Funny how all diesels have a different unique smell, like a fingerprint! My SD smells alot like my D-max. Powerstrokes usually smell oily to me, and thats because there PCV system vents to the intake and they ingest alot of oil and burn it.

I love the smell of diesel/diesel exhaust....its awesome! Gasser exhaust is gross....thats the worst part of the 300E....especially on a cold start on a freezing cold day....when its running rich to warm up faster....yuck. Its not so bad at operating temp....not really much smell to it....at all.

I love the smell of Diesel in the morning!! Seriously though, I love it too. I had Myrtle in my shop one day and had him running, smoking up the shop on a cold, cold day. I said "Man I hate to turn the engine off, it smells so good, but I might die if I dont..."LOL It does smell good.

I like diesel smell too....smells like money going into my pocket!
My smeller must be poor, they all smell about the same to me. Gassers vary a lot though.
