She Died....
I was driving on the highway the other night when my vibration damper (main) pulley self destructed taking with it the a/c compressor, and the front of the crankshaft.
I am waiting on the dealer to give me the final word but I think it is done.....It was a fun (almost) 3 years....really bummed right now. R.I.P. Heidi (1982-2009) W123 Turbo 615500kms P.S. I was SO looking forward to taking the picture with "617952" kms

Is there some way to check for or prevent this sort of damage before it takes out the crankshaft?

There are threads here describing revivification of the crankshaft nose. Usually the slots for the pins are destroyed. People have drilled in new holes at different locations and had them work. Dealer may not have considered this possibility.

I bet the belts being too tight plays a role in the failure. As such, I've made sure to keep the belts on all of ours err'ing on the side of too loose rather than too tight.

I had the same thing happen with my 87 300D, at just a little over 3 years, and I was wanting to take a picture of 200,000 miles (stopped at 199,420). Trying to find a 603 isn't as easy as a 617 though. Anyone wanna help me drop a 617 in a 124 and commit sacrilege?
