300d Windshield Replacement

I'm having the windshield replaced on my 85D and was wondering if there is anything I should know to convey to and/or watch for with the auto glass installer. I'm having a local autoglass place do it.

When I called them, they seemed to know what is involved such as needing the seal/weatherstrip. They said the only one they can see thats available for it is one with a greenish tint with the darker tint along the top part.

I ordered a new one too. There is a recent thread on this including a link to the manual. Reading it will probably help avoid some serious problems.

It looks like the "biggies" are to cut the old one out, be very careful with the trim, install the glass and trim together in the new seal, don't install the sealant before installation, install the new seal with cords and soap of some kind and then seal the outer rim once it is in.

I'm going to take a ton of pics when I do mine next week along with the rear sunroof seal.

It does not look too bad. I have done it and other cars and I have yet to have a problem.

EDIT: One of my questions was: Do you need to remove the rain gutters on the sides of the windshield to get it in there?

You should fit the 'chrome' trim into the seal before setting the windshield.

I'm down in Kalamazoo. Getting a little leaking in ours just above the rearview mirror.. I would be interested in hearing of your experience and vendor used - if I should avoid or call. Please share. Thanks.

RS, I plan to have VOS Glass do it in GR. They looked at this windshield about 2 years ago when I was first thinking about doing it and the guy there said he had done a few of these back in the 80's.

Since my insurance will be picking up the tab, I decided to have a glass outfit do it. I'll probably hang around and watch them do it.

I'll post how it turns out. They said they have to order the glass which may take about a week.

I had a leak in the bottom corners of mine and bought the non hardening windshield sealant from Fastlane. It is a Merdcedes Benz product. It did a great job of sealing the windshield. This was after trying the standard stuff at the auto parts store. I get the impression that a lot of windshields are replaced that could simply be sealed with the correct product.

Look out for rust and get it treated while the windshield is out....

How do you seal the sides (where the rain gutter is)? Or do you just seal the top and bottom the best you can?

The last thing I want is a leak.

the procedure is on the w123 disc. bascially you put the chrome in the windsheild seal and be sure to seal it with windsheild sealant that can be found at Napa. then you light press the windsheild in.

It looks like I will be having an auto glass place (Clear Image) that the dealer uses do my car. I called my mb dealer and got their name. Since my insurance is picking up the tab I might as well get a co that knows mb's.

I spoke with another co at first but i did not like their attitude and that they were going to use an aftermarket gasket.

Smile How is the trim on Windshield removed

I'm looking to do some rust removal

Would like to remove the top trim on the front windshield - Please suggest how.

Do I just 'pry it off'?

Looks like I might need to remove side rails also - do you think so?

Thanks.

Uh..well the trim is removed by removing the windshield. It all goes together. If you pry it out, I can almost guarantee you you won't get it back in.

I'm mistaken. I was hoping that the trim would just pry off for me to better access the rust.

Removing the windshield is a job for professionals.

Guess I should suck up and pay the $2,500 to have the windshield removed, rust fixed, and car painted.

$2500 They going to paint the entire car?
Price seems too low to me. I'd make sure they do good work before bringing it there. If they are going to paint the entire car, which is about the only way for it to look right, the cost should be more like $3500~$4000 especially if they need to fix rust.

And, anybody can remove the windshield, quick too.
Oh... you wanted it in one piece?
