This noise is bad news, I know, but how bad?
So, I thought it was something in my trunk. A distinct "THUNK" everytime I hit a pothole (which in Michigan is approximately every 8 seconds). I cleared the trunk, and it's not something loose in the trunk.
It's something on/in/near the rear driver side wheel. NOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo! I don't know what to look for, and I trust the dealer like I trust Bernard Madoff. Please advise what this noise could be--I'm thinking that I should not drive Lola until I get this resolved. There is a faint wobble now in the steering whenever I hit the potholes (unless my imagination has made me paranoid--a possibility I cannot rule out). The noise sounds like the underside of the car was hit by a blunt object--and I'm certain I feel the wheel wobble a bit.

Perhaps a blown shock, damaged spring, or damaged trailing arm (if in the rear)?
Or maybe a bearing is damaged. Or on the way simpler side of things....might just be a damaged tire. Could have snapped a belt or cable inside your tire. I'd have them checked out. W123's have really rugged suspension.....if you hit a pothole the tire/wheel take most of the force.

Also sway bar links make scary noises, at least when turning, when they are broken.
I bet this isnt going to be that expensive of an issue, especially if not tied to some major event (running into/over a curb etc.). Try to find an independent mechanic you can trust, and then get a second opinion from another.

My money is on a dead sway bar link.

Could be the exhaust banging under there.
Somebody's got to be an optimist. |

It's not the exhaust
that's the only thing I'd recognize. the sway bar link and trailing arms are new to me. I know (kinda) what the shocks and springs are supposed to look like. thanks, I'd crawl under with a flashlite and do some left/right front/back comparisons.
My big concern was is the wheel gonna fall off? Sounds like no. right?

a sagging exhaust will be easy to rule out... and as for your wheel falling off, probably not happening soon, is it localized? to one side?
probably sounds a heck of alot better than a diesel engine running with no oil Ive heard that before, sitting in the driver seat, made me cry |

It could be trailing arm bushings, especially if you feel a "shift" in the steering. I noticed a sideways shift when taking curves such as a freeway interchange ramp. It's not easy to determine the condition of the bushings until you drop them. To do so, an MB spring compressor is needed. But regarding this possibility the first question is, are you noticing any unusual rear tire wear?

I would also check the sway links. They are white plastic on each side right by the wheel.
I highly doubt there's any risk of the wheel falling off. W123's have a very rugged suspension....

No doubt, sway bar link. Sounds like a midget banging on the sheet metal.

I vote for blown shock. I just had that happen last month. Both rear shocks went and every time I drove over a pothole the car would make a really nasty THUNK! noise. I would also get a wobble in the steering whenever it happened. Easy way to test it, go to the back of your car and quickly push down and release above each wheel well. If the car bounces more than one or twice ... shocks are gone. (the steering wobble is because the rear-end no longer bieng held by the shocks ... so its really bouncy. So essentially the rear end of your car lifts off the road when you bounce back from the pot hole, which results in a loss of traction .. and thus a wobble ... scary feeling btw) So if it is the shocks, how bad is it? you can drive it like that. I wouldent recommend driving at high speed, and I'd get the shocks replaced as soon as possible. Will be expensive though because its highly recommended that you should do both the left and right rear shocks at the same time. Even if one side is good. Get HD shocks too btw.
