OM617 ran with no oil
I ran across a 126 to replace my rust bucket. It was run with out engine oil and now makes "a weird sound" or knock.
If it indeed is knocking due to the no oil condition, can I just pull the oil pan off and replace the bearings? You could do that with my last car obsession(SHO) and it would be fine. It could be something like the air filter. My air filter hits the valve cover sometimes and it sounds terrible. I have not looked at the car yet. Thanks |

Before turning the car over make sure you get a new filter and oil in there, and run a preoiler. The air filter makes a wonderful noise that has gotten a few members cheap cars because the dealer thought it was on the verge of death(from the noise)

If it was run with no oil for more than 20 seconds the engine is going to need significant work. No engine (not even a Yamaha) could survive that.

I did that once....
bought a 1980 300CD NA that the owner said, "had been run low" on oil, but had been running fine since. It ran very well, but had a very slight knock, that I thought was anything but a rod. Long story short....It lasted exactly two days... I spent the next two weeks replacing the engine with a used one. My good deal cost double what I had thought.

If it is making a serious knock; when you drain the Oil remove the lower Oil pan and look for metal fragments. The thread below will explain better. Just bought a 1982 300D, has engine knock. Look for metal particles on the old Oil Filter also.

I will take a look this weekend. I have a perfectly good running engine in my rust bucket 300SD right now. So my friends and I could just go to the auto craft shop on base and swap engines. But 1500 is a little steep of an asking price for a car with a bum engine. Thanks for the info

I've torn down several 617's that were "run low" or "run out" of oil, and as a consequence developed a "knock". Every single rod bearing on every single engine was toast.
Sometimes you can get away with running out of oil, but if it's knocking probably you didn't. Good luck with yours..

Depending on the condition of the rest of the car I would offer between $500~700 for a car that needs a replacement engine. You can probably get the seller down.

21 TO 1 compression ratio really puts some pressure on rod bearings.
