Did U noodle her seat? I could not believe how hard her seat was before I did this.
My Wife hated mine, beacause of her seat mostly, I eventually found out. I even got her to drive it half way to town, I drove it back, lol. Would a simple noodle save you and the SD? Your marriage seems fine. Don't give it away for that price ! Start at 5G and work down. I doubt I'd sell mine for that $2,000 price.

I laughed so hard at that first line, coffee almost spewed out my nose! We tend to be a little more conservative than that, but I'll ask her if that would help...
I will assume you are talking about the pool noodles in the seat--I did that with the SD and it helped immensely. Comfort is not her main issue with the car--it's the diesel and the long wheelbase. She would probably be fine with a newer diesel or a shorter wheelbase. I'd love to get a manual 240 from the early 80's and I think she'd be fine with that eventually. The noodle issue is my wife's main beef with my SD.....she says the seat hurts her back real bad. (admittedly the passenger seat kinda stinks).....but I'll be swapping both out with a pair of 91 350SDL seats I have.....soon.....she tested those out and gave them approval for comfort.

This in not a time to SELL diesel. Now is the time to buy. As soon as fuel prices will start to climb again people will want diesels again but then it's kinda late for a good deal.

My wife loves our SD and the way it drives and the short turning radius. It has great visibility and for the size of it doesn`t seem all that big.
The w126 is one of the most beautiful designs of cars on the road. The mini van or any van for that matter has a lot to be desired on styling. Think brick. It seems today every one is hung up on the SUV, they all have the same over profile, a wedge type shape. high in the rear. most all are huge and bulky looking. Escalade, Explorer and that Toyota Denali come to mind. Almost need a Commercial license to operate one. The early vans were the old panel trucks with double doors in the rear. Then later on holes were cut in the sides and windows installed and the Suburban was created which evolved into the SUV When I was a kid growing up, the big 3 had the basic Station wagon, worked very well and was user friendly with good visibility. The chevy nomad comes to mind. The Mercedes TD wagon is another good example of the Station Wagon, but Heaven forbid to call it one.. If money were no object and I had plenty, there really isn`t anything new I would buy. porbably just buy the best examples of 123 and 126 and have the Classic center redo them for me. I feel for you that your wife has such a dislike for the older stinky, smelly, clanky, clunky, slow, cantankerous, uncomfortable old diesels. You have to live with her, and marital bliss beats having to duck from the frying pan whizzing past your head . In time you will get the whiff of Diesel smoke, and will need your fix and be back to driving one. Just a shame to get rid of what you have worked on to get to where it is. I figure as long as they get what they want, maybe I can have a little of what I want. she does her sewing and I do my wrenching. Charlie

My wife doesn't mind so much that I have MB diesels, but the fact that I HAVE 4 OF THEM!! She says I could sell them all and get a really nice car. I tell her I don't want a newer really nice car. I've massively bonded with China, my white wagon is my fleet flagship and in great shape! No hint of a spec of rust. And I told her that my '95 E300 IS my newer car. She said "newer than that!".
She actually isn't too bad about it. But it is the 4 MB's, the F150, the 30 year old Chevy stepside PU and the '67 Camaro that has a cumulative effect..... She did minivans for about 10 years but finally had had enough. She loves her Infiniti FX, so buying that has helped me me skirt the MB issue. As long as she doesn't have to drive one them all is OK, and at least she will ride in the '95..... When Smash finds a new home then that will help a bit, but I use him for my daily driver so at least he isn't just sitting there.

Maybe you could just hide the car and tell her you gave it to charity?

Mine didn't like my SD when I first got it, but then it was a pretty big POS. She likes it now and bugs me about driving it. I haven't let her yet. I would get rid of her before the SD.

Epic thread..free bump.
My wife makes fun of my old car love and hates to ride in it. Deep down I think she likes the car but doesn't want to admit it. She always points out when she sees an old Merc on the road. The day my wife decides what car I drive is the day our marriage is no longer worth it. Never trade away your passion!

My wife won't drive SD just because she likes/trust new cars but she loves the look of it. She'll say "damn, this car doesn't get old, still looks sharp" So I respect her for that. But my little girl, every time we drive by MB she'll go "Daddy, a STAR!" |
