Shifting Points on Light Throttle: '82 300SD; (1-2)15MPH/(2-3)17MPH/(3-4)38MPH

On flat roadway with just enough throttle to get car to move and accelerate from a stop. I'd say Normal Driving for most persons.

I'm not sure if this is about normal or not since this is my first Automatic Diesel. It downshifts real well and upshifts aren't bad either as far as flaring goes.

I have touched nothing.

Any feedback?

One thing I did was tighten that cable going to trans. Also take slack out of pedal linkage.

Shift points are controlled by the Bowden cable. If you search on it, there are a fair number of threads describing the adjustments if you want to adjust it.

Tightening the Bowden Cable adjusts all the shifts right? If I tighten it do the shifts come earlier or later? Do I go a turn at a time or adjust some length at a time. TY

I turn it to where it takes up slack. This will keep it down more in lower gears.Lugging a diesel is bad.

The effect is not linear. The cable preloads a set of springs which opposes a shift valve; expect a more significant change in the upper gear shifts.

I want to make my 3-4 shift earlier, or is 38MPH about right??

So if I adjust it, I will loosen it, is this correct, to have it shift a bit earlier?

Pfsh, my 3-4 is at 25mph :P

I'll read up more to see if what I have it par for these cars. Thanks for replies.

According to my 722.3 operations manual, the 3-4 shift should occur at 33 km/hr with the engine at idle rpm, 67 km/hr at full throttle. (Those figures are not vehicle specific, however.)

Thanks Tango. Were you a radio operator in Navy? I use to work on ships that is why I'm asking. Looks like mine is a tad late at 38MPH then. This is what I had sort of felt but wasn't sure. It's consistent which is the good part.
