When was the last time you changed the fuel filters or air filter etc?

Air.

"Billowing black smoke" would lead me to believe that, for some reason, the engine is starved for air. Iced-over air filter element? Can you bring the car inside and let it thaw out a bit?

Jay.

Billowing black smoke sounds like it's getting good fuel flow.

I bet it's on the intake side. Either restricted intake at some point, or a malfunctioning EDS or EGR system.

I would definitely check the air filter first.

Interesting problem. Never heard of this before.
