W123 Passenger -> Driver seat swap.

Hello

How many times has this happened to you, you come across a car in the junkyard that has a perfect passenger seat but a wrecked driver seat, Or your own driver seat is badly worn but your passenger seat is perfect. The explanation is simple, the drivers seat is used much more than passenger side seat. The solution is now just as simple.

So my task for this afternoon was to find a way to install the good condition 1982 300D passenger seat into my 84 300D with a thrashed driver seat. My bolster was worn and the seat back was broken, and the seat bottom was worn and had broken springs. My 82 driver seat was also pretty far gone, the passenger seat was in good shape with no broken springs. Here is how I installed it.

First I removed the seat from the car(10mm X 5). I then removed the rear cover on the seat and removed the arm rest (27 mm nut). Then I removed the seat back from the seat base (13 mm X 4). With that accomplished I removed the armrest bracket (13mm). I then removed the seat belt retainer from the seat back (13 mm).

I then followed the exact same process on the 82 300D passenger seat. Then I installed the seat belt retainer, arm rest bracket and arm rest onto the good 82 seat back. I had to make some small incisions in the mbtex to allow for the new holes.

The next step was to transfer the seat rails from the 84 driver s seat to the 82 passenger seat bottom. This part of the process is a PITA because you have to remove 6 #3 Phillips screws that cannon all be accessed with the seat rails in one position. I was able to remove the front and rear screws without much difficulty however the center screw was obscured, I had to remove the lower seat rails in order to access the screw (6 more #3 Phillips). Repeat the same process on the 82 Passenger side seat. Reinstall the rails on the desired seat.

Reinstall the seat back on the correct seat base, then reinstall the seat in the car.

Enjoy your new driver seat. Total time for me was about 2.5 hours. The only negative is the seat recline knob is now on the opposite side however it is still perfectly accessible. I had to lose some of the plastic trim because mine was too brittle and broke upon removal.

Seatback design changed from 82 to 83. Will interchange, but will look a bit different.

Discovered this AFTER finding a nice palomino passenger seat for a spare for my 83.

Yep Absolutly true, You have to be pretty attentive to notice it. The pattern on the MBTEX is also different.

I have a seatbelt belt clasp dilemma
I found some immaculate seats from an 85 TD wagon which I have installed into my 79 TD but got a nasty surprise when I discovered that the old clip's extension is too wide to enter the clasp on the seat
Unfortunately I ditched my old seat without thinking of salvaging the old clasp.
I wonder if 85 W123's and W124's had similar clasps and buckles.
Any advice would be helpful. I assume that it won't be too much trouble to remove the clip from the belt once the bolt has been removed.
Thanks

I find it easier to just remove the upholstery, and leave the tracks on the spring box. However, if the springs themselves are bad as well, then you are forced to do the "seat track shuffle" (sounds like a dance move).

There is no way to get the clip past the bracket at the bolt end, and obviously at the other end is the reel. The clip cannot be removed from the belt without cutting it, which would be a safety issue.

You are either going to have to find a late-style belt and reel, or find someone who has an early clasp for sale.

There are actually three styles of clasp, so you will need a be careful what year you specify. I am not sure what the last year was for the earliest style, which is what I imagine you have.

Iam not up to speed on what years belts fit, or when MB did change them.
I do know there has been some changes on the MB Tex. I do like the MB Tex and style of the 85 seats. The pleats are deeper and have a more classy, rich look to them, compared to what was used in like our 80 240D with it`s flat style pleat look.

The W126 seat spring bottom will work in a W123 also. I installed one form a 90 or 91 126 into either mine or my bro in Law`s 82 240D. The seat springs are better and come with the rubber foam roll pieces in the corner coil springs. The W123 MB Tex will fit properly.

Yeah I agree the Seat Tracks are a PITA to remove and reinstall, but they will bolt onto a W126 seat bottom or Spring Box.
I have a spare seat to use as a guide when trying to figure what piece goes where.

I don`t know if the W123 MB Tex will fit onto a W126 seat back or not, but the W126 has the electric tilt, so that would be a problem.

Use the passenger seat Spring Box on the drivers side as then you are using the left side as the drivers out side.

The W123 seat back has the holes in the frame for the Arm Rest to fit either side. (Think driving on the left side of the road compared to the right side)

I don`t remember, but the round black tilt knob might fit either side.

If the Pleats start getting flat, some times the strips slide to the rear and you can see them hanging out under the rear of the seat.
I have pulled them forward with some needle Nose plires, then Hot Glued them into place.

If the cloth backing has rotted, then you are sort of screwed, unless you can have the seat restitched with new cloth and have the strips sewn back in.
