Went to mechanic...WOW :/

After recently getting my 220D running again, I drove her for about a week to see what problems would arise. Other than a MASSIVE oil leak, leaky clutch line and the push stop not working and the brake pedal acting funny as well as the clutch pedal sticking to the floor. I assumed that after these were all taken care of I could finally get her some new tires ect.... Well, I assumed wrong.

After taking her to the mechanic to fix the oil leak and the leaking clutch line this morning, and having not heard back I decided to go over there. As I walked up, I was greeted by "Ohhh glad you're here, want to go over some stuff with you". As I'm walking to the lift that the 220 is on, i'm told: "You've got problems" I'm like greeeeat what now?

Turns out, my brake pedal was acting funny cause the brake lines blew out since they were so decrypt. He told me a day or two more and I wouldn't of had brakes. On top of that the tie rod ends were shot, the clutch linkages were barley hanging on, the transmission mount was gone... The drive train bearing was shot, he needs to put a new differential cover on the rear, it needs new linkages for the sway bar since both are just missing lol The oil leak turned out to be the oil filter housing was put on wrong by my last mechanic. When it came to ask how much this was going to be, he told me 500$. Which I can deal with for all this work.

He told me it was literally an unsafe car but now will be totally different when I get her back tomorrow. The only reason she wasn't done today was because they had to order the tie rod ends which come in tomorrow. I'm excited to get her back knowing she's safe to drive and go someplace. Just crazy that so much was wrong with it even though it virtually felt fine. Glad I had it professionally looked at! The only things now is, the fuel gauge isn't working right and the left headlight only works when it wants to and the side lights won't turn on for some reason...

$500 is very low for a mechanic to do all that work. Are you sure thats not just the parts cost?

I was going to say, it cost me nearly $900 for some new glow plugs, a coolant flush, new belts, and a couple other small things from my mechanic (including evil servo install). Parts and labor were the same price, $450 each.

By the way I'm not going back to this mechanic ever again.

None of those problems are unexpected for a car of this age and history. Like the others said, $500 is nothing to get all that work done. I'd happily pay that and I don't EVER pay anyone to work on my vehicles!

If all that work is really being done for $500 and you didn't accidentally leave off a digit, then you'd better post his name, location and phone number because people will be willing to drive from a 5 state radius to have him do their work.

Yes... $500 is very, very inexpensive. I can only "assume" that these things are much easier to do on the old car than on a newer one.

No kidding.....just front brakes is about $400 labor from our local dealer. (labor)

The only stuff I pay the dealer to do is steering/alignment stuff, that's it.

wait, wait wait...
differential cover needs replacing? you mean gasket?
what on the oilfilter housing is wrong? the cover oring or the housing to block gasket?
What's a "drive train bearing"? drive shaft center support?

I'm with the others: the $500 would be about the going rate for the brake work and maybe the clutch issues. For him to take care of all of that is amazing!!!
He should be thrown some luv in the way of his contact info if this price turns out to be legit. Great deal!!

If it is true it must be a supply and demand issue out in Palm Springs, too much labor supply and so you'll work for less....that or he has no overhead somehow.

Yeah, I was a bit surprised when he told me the price, but he said 500$ when I asked him how much this was going to cost. He seems like a really cool guy and his assistant who actually took the car in the morning was really cool too. He knows my last mechanic and was in shock after he saw some of the "fixes" my last mechanic had done.

I was reassured as I was leaving that "Not to worry, I was in good hands" which was kind of nice to hear, and also "If you ever want to sell it, let me know!" lol. When we go pick it up later today I'll let you all know what happened. If it really turned out to be 500$ and what work they fixed. I'm under the impression everything they showed me is getting fixed.
