little oil on oil filter pan
I have a 85 300D and I was looking at the oil filter and it has some oil setting at teh bottom, some one told me that's a signal of a tired engine, but the car does not through black smog at all, (only when hard aceleration) and is very fast. The car has 248K miles on it. Can anybody advise.

Do you mean inside the filter housing? There's always some oil left in the bottom when you pull out the filter. Black smoke on hard acceleration means nothing.

Not quite sure what you are talking about. It sounds like you have oil in the bottom of your air filter. If so that oil is blowby, and it happens when the piston rings get worn and let motor oil by. There is an upgraded breather hose that is flat that helps reduce the amount of oil that gets by, but that is about all that you can do.

That's right, your picture explains what I'm talking about. Is this means my engine is running on its last legs? or just normal wear on 248K miles?

It means nothing, there's always oil sitting in there. Perfectly normal. At 248k your engine could easily have 100,000+ more miles left in it.

If there is a lot of thick black oil residue in the bottom of the Oil Filter Housing this can be an indication that the Prior Owner did not change the Oil and Oil Filter on a regular basis or was using a non-detergent Oil. The next causese would be an Engine driven for a long time that is out of tune. Timing late, Injectors Spray Nozzles worn out with a low Pop-pressure, plugged Air Filter, a lot of Timing Chain Stretch that effects the Cam Shaft timeing ; things that were not done to keep the Engine running in top shape. Particles of metal in the bottom of the Oil Filter housing or sticking to the Oil Filter would be an indication of some extreme wear going on in your engine and that would be a cause for concern.

I think I'd be more concerned if there WASN'T oil in the oil filter housing.
Basstrip, if you're worried about the condition of your oil as it pertains to the engine's status, you could have a small sample analyzed at Blackstone Labs (www.blackstone-labs.com). They will send you a free test kit, you send them a small sample and $22.50 (I think). They can tell you if you have wear metals in the oil, if you have coolant, fuel or water in the oil, if it is the right viscosity, etc. You just tell them the mileage on the oil, the brand, weight and engine type/mileage. If you just changed the oil, though, drive around with it for a while to get an informative sample.

When the engine is running that housing is full of oil. So for there to be a little when the engine sat and the filter is out, it perfectly normal. Nothing to worry about. The only thing you might want to do it change out the o-rings on the end of the rod that is on the lid. As well as the big o-ring the seals the lid.

Normally the large O-ring is included with the new filter.
