High Oil Consumption Only On Freeway?
I have noticed that my '82 240D burns significantly more oil on the freeway than in town. Is this normal? I go through a quart in approximately 600 miles on the freeway, but can drive 1000 miles easy if I drive mainly in town. I'm not sure why this would be the case, and don't know if this is signaling a problem of some sort. Any ideas?

Fill the oil to 1/2 between the marks, not up to the top mark.

It is not unusual for these cars which consume oil to consume it at a faster rate on the freeway than around town. It really isn't that it is consuming it at a faster rate, it is just that the motor's average RPMs per mile is higher at freeway speeds than in around town driving - in other words you still consume the same rate per revolution of the engine but you make the engine turn more times running it at a constant 65 MPH than tooling around town.
Also, you can try filling it only halfway between the marks but I suspect you will find that it makes no difference.

My opinion is a quart per 600 miles is sort of high. But heck a can of oil is cheap compared to a new car and you can keep the sump fresheded up!

Check the crankcase breather system.

I agree with Forced... It's far better to chase the low mark on the dipstick than the high point. I don't burn any oil that I notice when its down by the bottom, but do when it's near the top. Kind of a mystery why, but it may have something to do with excessive oil pressure under highway RPMs. You assuredly don't ever want to overfill, quick way to blow out engine seals.

10-4. I did notice the other day when I had the air filter off (probably should have mentioned this in the first post), that the flapper that allows air to be sucked into the intake manifold does not open more than what appears to be about 50% when the throttle is 100% open. Could the engine be sucking additional blow-by air in an attempt to get sufficient air into the intake? Just a thought. It's probably normal. . .
