Dead-end vacuum line and VCV in '96 E300D
 

My 1996 E300D (W210, OM606NA, 722.4 4-speed NON-electronic transmission) has a black vacuum line that ends in mid-air near the vacuum control valve (VCV). The black vacuum line comes from a switchover valve that lives under the ABS (but has nothing to do with ABS, that's just where it lives). The VCV has a right angle rubber connector that also ends in mid-air not too far from the black vacuum line.

Both of these items look like they ought to be connected to something–each other or something else. Maybe they're just vents–everything in the car works so I'm leaning towards the vent theory. I can't find anything in the DVD version of the FSM or in EPC that describes this area in sufficient detail. I would appreciate if someone with the same car would look and see if theirs is the same as mine or if different, how.

The connection on the VCV is the vent to atmosphere. It normally is extended to the cabin area to suck clean air.
The other pips could be meant to connect to it. Check where it terminates - open inside vehicle? then connect it to the VCV.

I agree that the connector on the VCV is the vent; my '87 has something similar (and it has a line that terminates inside the cabin, under the dash). I .should have seen that without your help -- thanks, Tony.

EPC cleverly hid the vacuum diagram for these bits with the intake and exhaust manifolds. After you choose the 606 diesel engine from the menu, you pick "14 Intake and Exhaust Manifolds" and then "170 Vacuum System 210."

In the diagram, the VCV with its 90-degree rubber elbow and the vent line from the changeover valve are shown at the upper right near the box with "606.912" in it. Both are indeed vents.

I was surprised that they don't have little filters on them like the vent for the EGR changeover valve on the left side of the diagram (part #95 in the diagram).
