Question Odometer AND Fuel Tank Sensor Unit BOTH SHOT!

I have received terrific advice and leads from you folks over the past several months.....have a 1982 MB 240D sedan with about 160K on odomoter.....

As luck would have it, my fuel tank sensor device is NOT working and hasn't been working now for about 4 months. I have not had the time to extract this unit, clean it and put it back in the tank as some have advised...I also don't want to pay the $200+ for a new one....

So I have been paying CLOSE attention to my odometer and calculating the miles driven to figure out how close to EMPTY I might be...have to start getting concerned after 400 miles....

Well the odometer JUST WENT SOUTH....no longer working because the small circular odometer reading gear is shot.....called someone who sells these for around $60 (highway robbery) and he said I would have to tell him what depth this gear is (?????)....1/8" or 3/16" or 1/4" are the dimensions I believe he said I had to figure out.....but this entails pulling the entire unit out of the car to measure it......yikes!

Does anyone know offhand what the dimensions of this single replacement part odometer gear might be for an 82 240D??????

Thanks.

It would be much cheaper to get a used speedo from another 240D and adjust the miles.

WTF? best thing to do is fix your odometer!
very simple repair. www.dieselgiant.com
instead of gluing the gear on like the site says, just rough up the shaft they show you how to extract with vice grips or similar and press it back into the gear!

Compress Ignite:

That's the outfit I called and they were the ones who asked me what the size of my odometer gear was.....they're the ones selling new ones for around $60...but they have three different sizes for the SINGLE gear wheel (plastic I believe) that goes into an odometer for an 82 240D OR SO THEY SAY!

I find this a bit hard to believe as there must be exact specifications SOMEWHERE for this part (they used to be readily available from dealers/resellers but no longer are).....

Still hoping that someone has this odometer in-hand or knows the specs for this part...but thanks for the input....always a help to me......cheers

Forced Induction:

Great idea but I've been told that THESE are as unreliable as the one I now have; and they simply wear out from use. This is why replacement of this part will perhaps allow my existing odometer to last for the rest of the life of this car......I have heard too many horror stories about odometers/speedos purchased on eBay that simply stop working after several months. And the cost to send this odometer out for repair and restoration is too darned expensive...several hundred dollars or more.

Are you suggesting the it is the SPEEDO and not the odometer gear that is SHOT? If so, how do I confirm this? Won't the gear still malfunction with a new speedo?

Thanks for your input...greatly appreciated....cheers!

Will check this out and get back to the forum...in the meantime, would love to get hold of specs for odometer gear if ANYONE has the depth dimension of this SINGLE gear unit that goes into 82 240D odometer unit....thanks.

Have ordered used speedo/instrument panel from salvage yard in FL...much easier to work on this baby than to extract, fix and re-insert odometer into car....also found a brand new fuel sensing unit for my car on eBay from guy in San Diego for just over $100 including shipping....hope to be back in tip top shape by end of next week....any ideas on adjusting odometer mileage (I know this is illegal) so that it reflects the LOWER mileage I have on my car at around 160K rather than the 190K+ on this replacement unit? I know that this can be tricky if one doesn't know what one's doing....and THAT would be me....thanks all for your input.....
