Sure, I'll help you destroy your diesel...

Do Not Use the K+N Junk!

Factory (MERCEDES) filters do a better job @ Filtration...AND last longer.

Is this one any better than K&N?

That ebay link... Looks like a hot air induction kit to me. It will make the intake noise louder, so it will probably seem like you're going faster but I'll wager you'll probably lose a few HP by installing it.

Before you buy a K&N or similar filter, read the air filtration & flow test from "Bob Is The Oil Guy"

Worse. Its a hot air intake, the filter is way too small for the engine and it filters just as poorly as a K&N.

A clean paper air filter will breathe better than a clean K&N; a dirty K&N will breath better than a dirty paper filter. So, buy paper and change it when it gets dirty - just like you're supposed to.

Wix can be bought cheaply at www.fleetfilter.com

why would you want an hot air intake???

IF you want more performance and power you want a cold air intake not a hot air intake.

Waste of money and a gimmic that dont work.

If you have a turbo why do you need a high performance filter?

I just change it when it gets dirty with paper. Hardly needs it. K and N is a gimmick IMHO

Get a filter-minder if you want to know when to change the paper filter

Nope. Its the other way around. The K&N becomes very restrictive when its dirty, and it takes much less dirt to clog it.

I guess I'm an anomaly; all my experimentation with the K&N over the past eight years lead me to say exactly what I meant to say.

It’s interesting to note the shape of these Dust Loading Curves. The AC and Baldwin filters each had near linear responses until reaching maximum restriction. Restriction for these filters increased at a constant rate versus the 9.8 gms/min dust feed rate. The other filters, most notably the oiled reusable types, had an exponential loading response before reaching maximum restriction. These filters had a lower initial restriction, but they became exponentially more restrictive under a constant flow of dirt. Also notice the length of the curves as it shows the relative test time for each filter (time to max restriction).
Quote:
The AC Delco filter test ran for 60 minutes before exceeding the restriction limit while the AMSOIL and K&N tests each ran for 20 and 24 minutes respectively before reaching max restriction. In 60 minutes the AC Filter accumulated 574gms of dirt and passed only 0.4gms. After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N “plugged up” nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt.

Thanks.
The easiest way is to go directly to their website: http://www.knfilters.com/ There you can get the part # and a listing of many local and internet dealers.

BTW, I believe in installing a K&N air filter because you like the concept of a rechargeable filter, not because you expect some miraculous "high-performance" gain. Using the drop in factory replacement works well and take many factors into account before spending your $'s on any modifications claiming "high-performance".

As if you haven't already noticed, there are many "opinions" about K&N air filters. They build quality parts and if you choose to use their product, I'm sure you won't "destroy your engine with grit" as perceived.

Take internet advice, including mine, with a grain of salt. Much of what can be found as "proof" or "research" is similar to what you find written on the bathroom walls. In both cases, you have to look at the source of the "author" and consider the basis of their statement.

Yes, they make a great air strainer.

Buying a filter because its "rechargeable" doesn't make much sense at all. An air filter is a $12/year expense (Less if you install a restriction gauge and change it when it actually needs to be changed), if you're that hard for cash then a car may not be the best transportation option.

There are other reasons I use a K&N filter but mentioning it in the crowd of biased information is a waste of time. You choose to not use them and I don't have a problem with that. As you can guess, I choose to use them because I believe the statement which you so thoughtfully decided to quote.

This area is the same as brand names for oil, additives, tires, car waxes, etc.....People like options. This is one option where I've chosen different. With two diesel vehicles pushing 400K miles and the past three gasoline vehicles pushing well over 200K, I feel comfortable with that choice.
