Oil Cooler Questions
Hello all,
I noticed the Oil Cooler was leaking on my 300D. It's a 1982 model. They are very expensive new, and I was hoping I could get one from a junk yard. I am aware of the thread issues. I was going to have a cooler with the lines still attached or cut, and work the lines off myself, delicately. Does anyone know what years these models used oil coolers? Does the 240 use the same cooler as the 300's, if at all? All I can find for information is the model year 1982 and later used oil coolers. Is that correct? Any help is appreciated on this matter. Thanks. Last edited by BishopJ; 04-05-2009 at 01:34 PM. |

I believe the 240 cooler is different.

From what I remember seeing in the boneyards the 240 has a small radiator with both lines attaching at the bottom. The 300 NA has an oil radiator just as tall as the coolant one, but not quite as wide as the 300 turbo, although the lines looked the same to me from memory. I also would not waste my time trying to salvage a used oil cooler line unless it looked like NEW; these two lines are extremely important to the health of your car. EDIT I misread the post and thought you wanted to salvage a cooler LINE. I think the substantially bigger cooler would be fine, but the lines are different. There is one line on bottom and one on top of the radiator.

I don`t know if the 300SD uses the same oil cooler as the 300D with the OM617. If so that will give you some more options.
There are a fix it from Mb called Screwed Nipples to repair the oil cooler threads if they get buggered up removing the old lines. Use Anti-seiz compound on the threads when you replace the lines. Charlie

I would buy a new one, but because the cheapest I can find it is 360$, I will try my luck with a good/used one.
I am still looking...thanks for the replies. |

I did a search on EBay, 300D oil cooler.
There is several up for bid. However, it is most likely cheaper to get one yourself at the J yard.
