Possible alternative con-rod for 350SD engines
Was thinking the other night.
Here in UK we have Sprinter 2.9 Turbos... These are 5 pot 602 engines.... Now if we divide 2.9 by 5 we get 580cc The 350SD is the 603 engine, with 6 pots.... If we divide 3.5 by 6 we get 583cc.... Maybe the rods are a reliable possible replacement for the older 350SD engine.... :D Maybe I havent a clue though.....;) |
Interesting idea. Mercedes has updated the 350's rods though, there's been like 5 revisions.

Those 2.9L engines are direct injection.
There was never a 5cylinder version of 3.5L 603.97. |
Thought the pistons themselves would be different, I don't think being DI or IDI predetermines the rod type. The head and pistons are the only difference on a VW 1.9TD and 1.9TDI.

It makes a HUGE difference. The piston has to sit higher for the combustion bowl in the piston so the rods have to be shorter to make up for it.

Nah, Nearly certain they are the usual Pre-Chamber engine. (Number, = OM.602.9xx, and look identical in appearance to the OM-602 in my 190D 2.5 ) They are also used in Sssanyong Musso 4x4. These are defo Idi pre-chamber motors, and are 2.9 litres offered in n/a and Turbo.... You are right, there never was a 5 pot 3.5.... You're thinking of the newer Direct-Injection CDi 5 and 6 pots, which are Totally different--They are DOHC to start with!....:D |

Notice the differences between the indirect injection and direct injection.
OM603.97 (the best picture I could find as an example): Glowplugs go in straight into the prechamber. http://www.peachparts.com//shopforum...chmentid=66167 OM602.98: Glowplugs go in at an angle to into the combustion chamber. Also notice the small injector holes and increased webbing on the lower potion of the block for strength. http://www.peachparts.com//shopforum...chmentid=66165 OM602.96: One large hole for the prechamber. http://www.peachparts.com//shopforum...chmentid=66168 OM602.98: No large hole for a prechamber, only the small two for the injector tip and glowplug. http://www.peachparts.com//shopforum...chmentid=66166 |
Do you know, F.I?
I am convinced I have seen a Pre-Chamber 5 pot, 2.9 Turbo motor--It was in bits at a local M.B. commercial-vehicle specialist some time ago... There seem to be so many variations out there, maybe such a thing exists. Any idea what the OM662 actually is--Cant find much about it apart from its 'similar' to the 602?? |

Hmm,--
Dont Forget, Not Everything that M.B and for that matter Ssanyong made was supplied to America..... We may have models and engines never heard of over there..... I didnt refer to whether or Not it had an Intercooler or VP29 IP either....It WAS in bits! OM662 Isnt a Typo either. It DOES exist. I have looked it up in my 2004 'Autodata' disc and its supplied to Australia in a minibus MB100 type van/commercial, as well as the later Ssanyong Musso/Korado! (Always SO confrontational!--I dunno!.....) |

............Looks like its the non-MB made ripoff/licensed version of the OM602..............
Not so sure about that.... Ssanyong list the 602 as well as the 662, and the data is different for each engine. M.B. also list the 662 for some Aussie commercials too.... |

Heavier rods are available from Mercedes
You can buy the heavier 350 rods from Mercedes. I believe they are for the 1995 S350.
