And honestly, if you check and replace some of the stuff you are considering bringing along, such as the belt, you should be fine. Doing it at home will be a lot easier then doing it on the road, I know first hand that it is. Auto parts stores and truck stops are everywhere, so don't worry about having to bring antifreeze or even oil (even though I just said to bring it =]). I've done that drive you are doing, you'll be fine.

Just check everything that might go, and replace it if you even question if it might fail or not. I wish I would have done this with my starter.
Colin, the mercedes diesels(well the 61x and 60x) series come with a funnel built in. Plus I would carry Mercedes coolant since its the proper stuff and not the green junk.

Also, I would only carry a spare belt just in case. Everything on this engine has been replaced(the head wasn't removed but just about everything mechanical is new)

oh and hattie, the cruise works, some person didn't leave the mounting hardware on the bracket so its just chilling there on top of the padding for the under dash panel at the moment

Wait, they come with a built in funnel?!? Really?! That's crazy.

But yeah, I see what you mean about the MB coolant stuff. That's what I have in mine!

I had my brushes wear too low on a long trip....causing me to lose voltage......then it got dark....the rest is history... MB roadside brought me a battery and I smacked the regulator while the engine was off.....and it miraculously starting working again (worked another 5,000 miles)....when I finally pulled it a few months later I found very worn down brushes and deeply grooved slip rings in the dying alternator. It served the car well though, it probably had close to 120k on it.....not bad for a rebuilt unit. I now have an 80A saab unit on my car that must have been nearly new, because the bearings spun smooth and the regulator brushes were 95% when I checked them. Price? $12....junk yard score.

Throw a hose clamp in there too. Last week while driving to Ohio the clamp on one of my oil lines broke, luckily I had one in the trunk.

That would never happen to the Hatterasguy SDL....it has mostly brand new parts throughout!

As does my SD......things like blowing oil lines are due to neglect and not enough maintenance!

Warren Buffett's Berkshire-Hathaway, Inc......$19.00 a share in 1965 to $151,650.00. What a ride!
Uhmm, they meant the Alternator Regulator, not the window regulator. Nice feature on MB alternators is the removable regulator that carries the carbon brushes. Usually they wear down, the solid state regulator doesn't fail. Not so on VW's I saw my friends alternator that died on his CDI, it was a Bosch alternator but the regulator was part of the whole diode cap, a ***** to change, it looked like a 2 hr job just getting it out! Darned transverse serpentine belt up against the fender and you have to remove coolant hoses to get to it, I said NO WAY would I fix his alternator! I suggested he go buy a Mercedes!

Incidentally, Berkshire A shares are now $87,900 so you need to edit your tag line. Wow! clear sign of the damn subprime Obamanation bailout at work!

Something that I threw in on my last road trip was one of those hand held heat sensor guns too get an accurate reading when I suspected a funky temp reading.

Remember that thread about breakdowns? It was about a month ago.

By far, the number one cause of breakdowns was the key and lock getting stuck. If I was paranoid, I would carry a tumbler with matching key, plus the tools to change it.

trip tools

In addition to previously mentioned, I take a boat fuel primer squeeze bulb and 8' of 5/16" fuel hose, 4 small clamps, and a gallon of fuel in an old gallon jug. If the fuel filter plugs it helps you to bleed quicker, and if your fuel line plugs from fast driving (mine did, your car is high milage too) you can run out of the gallon jug 15 miles til you get to an auto supply/shop. I had to clean out my tank, no strainer in the tank on a 240d. Lots of metal rocks in the tank, not algae. Long distance between payphones and shops in eastern colorado. Alternator advice previous is somewhat incomplete, I changed my regulator/brush package and it lasted 250 miles before the grooves in the alternator slip rings tore up the new brushes and left me without electricity in Hoosier national forest christmas morning. Thank goodness for tow ropes and electricityless operation. Change the regulator/brushes before they wear out and tear up the slip rings, or change the alternator before you leave unless you know it is low milage. Make sure your front wheel bearings are clean and greased in less than 3 years, your transmission if manual is topped off, and the differential is topped off. If it hasn't been done in 10 years, get the rear wheel bearings packed, you'll get a better price at home than on the road- beware, some people say this can cost $500. If the previous owner used synthetic grease, forget the 10 years, but most used car records are not that good.

I just replaced the lock tumbler on both of our cars for this reason. The W124's was broken in half when taken out. Talk about LUCK!
