EMP attack

Does anyone know what model, or year, would survive an EMP attack? I believe it has something to do with computers in the vehicles. Thanks.

I know anything with a 617 will, it'll run with no electrical system whatsoever... Verified when my alternator died 300 miles from home...

Any vehicle that is not electrically controlled, i.e. computer, modules, sensors and what not, will run after an EMP attack. Nichola Tesla would have known very well about this information.
If you had a mechanical diesel engine running, and attacked it with a massive EMP, it wouldnt be affected. If my 240 was slammed by an EMP tommorow, I could still drive it after finding a way to start it, albeit the electrics maybe rendered useless, I.E. Radio, cruise control, any circuit type device, maybe battery?
I am not fur sure on any of this, I am speculating using common sense mostly. Someone will probably come along and correct me soon.

EMP does not effect motors, generators, batteries, etc, only devices that are more sensitive to short term voltage spikes... Better question is, why are you expecting one?

Any relays or solenoids with a grounded, metal casing should be unharmed.

A vehicle can be grounded with a chain attached to a trailer hitch or the frame. This is not an ideal ground, but should work with the voltages produced by EMP providing the chain is laying on a wet, conductive surface. This is about the only method of vehicle grounding that is truly portable. If the vehicle is stored in a garage with a dry concrete floor, it would be better to use an alligator clip clamped to the frame or trailer hitch (see below), with the ground wire shown above. The other end of the ground wire should be attached to a ground rod or water pipe.
The illustration above is for grounding a vehicle that is not moving. How does one ground a moving vehicle? A dragging chain! The chain above has enough length to wrap around the front of the trailer hitch, just behind the rear axle and about 3 feet in front of the rear bumper, with about 4" of chain left to drag on the ground. It would be very hard for someone to see the dragging chain except on vehicles with lift kits. The chain simply drags along on the pavement, makes very little noise, and wears out relatively slowly. The frame and body of the vehicle are normally insulated from the ground by the rubber tires, but the dragging chain makes a good ground. I use a long enough chain so that I could make 3 loops around the front of the trailer hitch and still have 4" of chain dragging. When the chain wears down, I can remove the attachment clamp, unwrap one loop in the chain, and again have enough chain dragging to make a good ground. So, attach a ground chain and go on vacation without worrying about being stuck.

yes

about all the older diesel cars should survive one the reasons i bought mine plus it will run on bio fuels or worse case about anything long enough to do.

does the 87 up models have like idle control or something electronically controlled?

not sure if the vw's idi diesels would or not they have to have about 9-10 volts to keep the eso solenoid closed to keep it running my alt. died once u could turn the headlights on and it would about die.

Yep, all the cars up to the 606 would likely work fine. Maybe even the 606, not sure if it "needs" the electronics to actually just run.....the 603 idle control would be destroyed, but it'd still run.

The 1986-87 300D (W124/OM603) and later models have an electronically-controlled idle circuit but the engine will run without it, just idle at a lower than optimum RPM. The 1995 E300D with the OM606 NA engine might run, it has a mechanical connection between the footfeed and the IP. Not so the 1996 (and later), it is fly-by-wire.

EMP should only effect computers. The series Future Weapons on the military channel did a special on EMP awhile back. There is an EMP test facility in New Mexico where they have a device that simulates an EMP attack by putting out several hundred kilovolts. The host drove a modern car under this device and it stopped the car dead. The car stopped running and would not start. However the lights, radio and power windows still worked. While the computers in the car were fried it obviously did not affect the battery or wiring.
I would think the 123chassis cars should be immune from EMP. Also, He should be worried about EMP because several countries can launch this kind of attack on us and it's not too difficult.
