W126 Sunroof Parts

Just a quick recap before I go to the dealer later and sell my leg to them...

To fix the sunroof on my car I have to buy the entire assembly, I can't buy the rails or control arms seperatly? (The mortor works fine but its closed in a lopsided position) Also i'm told that in order to do the job the headliner that slides with the roof has to be removed by "bending the hell out of it" Is all of this true?

I'm not sure our sunroofs are the same, but I believe are very similar (mine is 300D). I rebuilt mine three years ago and only bought new lift arms. If yours is closed crooked I suspect it is a broken lift arms. Mine were both broken, one in more than one place. I did not need new slide rails, but you might, depending on your VIN (the dealer should be able to tell you). Each lift arm for me was $128, but that was a while ago and with a discount. You do not need to bend the heck out of the liner, but you'll need to do some maneuvering and a little bending. Basically you slide the roof back part way, unpop the four clips at the front of the liner, and slide just the liner forward ... then you pull the liner upward and slide it out. I didn't find that part too terrible. The bad part for me was that there was no way to open my roof, only tilt ... so that was a can of worms you hopefully don't have to face.

Part of the problem is that when I asked the dealer about only buying the arms I was told "We can't sell you just the arms, our system shows that you have to buy the entire assembly" I've heard this before and have yet to find a way around it.

I think this is the exact same thing that Hattie went through with his 87.

So was I but he's MIA today.

I'm prolonging this trip today until I get an answer but I have to leave the office by 4:30 at the latest. Parts department closes at 5 even if you have a part waiting there for pick-up. Theres only one word for that.....lame.

Thankfully I know enough people there that someone will always hold it for me if I can't make it on time...the same cannot be said for ordering parts.....

Sunroof!

"To fix the sunroof on my car I have to buy the entire assembly"

If this ends up being the case I have a complete sunroof assembly from a 91 350SD available, I sent an email regarding. Good Luck!

Would "used" parts be an option?

I would not recommend used lift arms. They are fairly easily broken, and who knows how close the used pair are to breaking? This is not an impossible job, but it's not an easy one ... you don't want to do it again when the used set breaks. However, it's probably luck of the draw ... if you can find a set that looks good and from someone you trust has cared for the sunroof (that makes all the difference), go for it.

I do not understand what "the whole assembly" means. The whole sunroof? The lift arms and slide rails together? If it's the lift arms and slide rails, they may be right. I'm not sure if this applies to the 126, but in the 124, if you're car was built after a certain point, it has updated slide rails, so you're fine. If it's built before that date, you need to buy the new slide rails to correspond with the new arms you'll be buying. However, I don't recall the rails being very expensive ($20 each?). What did the dealer quote you?

I tried to get the parts separately but they said it can't be done. Whole assembly charge is close to $600. The roof that I'm getting came from a 91 350SD so that means it bent its rods so it must be pretty new

Wow ... $600? You must have a different setup than my 124 ... what year is your SDL? Hopefully you're used roof will work out ... if it's been properly lubed and used, it should be fine! I think what killed mine is that my dad never used it (and obviously never lubed it) ... so when I got the car and started to use the roof, it binded, broke and the rest is history.

I actually have a tin on lube for just that. (It broke before I got the chance to use it) I should add that I'm the one who broke it....The rubber seal popped out and held the roof shut...stupid me pushed it too hard and I broke the clip.

hi. I am having the same problem. 90 SDL with sunroof stuck open. Anyone know the procedures for fixing this? Thought it might be the cable but after the above post, it seems its going to be more involved. just grinding noise when switch pressed.
