I think I will give it a try. I can pull almost 30 out of it on cruise on long trips and my car responds to even small changes in terms of MPG. I drive 120 miles a day round trip to work, so I notice every little thing...Robert

The 3.07 is too short.

But, I wouldn't disregard a good 2.88 if you happen to come across one from an '85 W123 or W126. The 2.47 is better if you frequently cruise at 75 mph or above, however. Note that it won't climb much of a hill at that speed.

2.88:1 is a one year deal and I want a 500 rpm minimum reduction in engine rpm @ cruise. Once I leave my driveway, it's about 300 yards to the freeway. Once I get on the freeway, I don't lift off the throttle until I pull in the driveway at work. I have been here 10 years and worn out a couple of cars making that drive....Robert

Search through the parts tab above, looking up the seals for a W116 diff, the 2:88 for the W123/w126 85 and the 2:47 gassers.

see if the parts #`s are the same or different.

If anyone needs a 2.47, I have one from an 84 Euro 500SEC which I believe to be an LSD that i am happy to part with. It should fit W116 and W126 cars.

I can ship but this fella is heavy. Somewhere in the region of 60lbs (guestimate) from 75229 if you guys what to get an idea of what it will cost to ship.

126 Diff Into W116 - A Few MORE Questions:

I am getting ready to swap a 126 differential (2.47:1) into my 1978 300SD. I have read a lot of data on the forum, so I wanted to post this and be sure I am 'getting it' as they say.

I know the 116 yoke needs to be installed on the 126 differential. Easy enough with the correct socket and resetting the pinion bearing preload.

Axles:

From what I have read, the sealing surfaces on the 126 and 116 axles are the same. It is the OD of the seals that are different, so you would need a 126 specific axle seal to fit the differential, then simply use the 116 axles???

Differential mounts:

Pretty standard looking setup with large studs on top the differential and a single rear mount.

Are the mounts the same between the 116 and 126??? Or, do I need something different here???

Speedo:

No luck finding a speedo for this setup. I do, however, have a 107 speedo in stock that is factory calibrated for a 2.65:1 axle, so the error would be much smaller than running the 2.47:1 and the stock 3.07:1 speedo.

IIRC, the 107's used a 15" wheel, so the 205/70R/14 tires on my 116 would also factor into the equation.

I'm thinking this would come very close to reading correctly.

Thanks for your input....Robert

You are a pretty technically inclined guy bu you would have to take the diff in to a shop and have them set the preload-wouldn't you?

Make sure you get the preload spec from checking the differential with an inch pound torque wrench before removing the flange as shown at 2:08 into this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8APYO2sZyJU
Then make a note of it and after installing the new flange tighten the nut down to the same preload spec.

Yes with the seal, and 116 and 126 axles interchange.

You should be able to use either the 116 or 126 mount. You may have to flip it in order for it to work.

It's a standard tapered roller bearing. 8 to 10 in/lbs of preload is generally correct for this style of bearing. I will check the FSM, but it's easy to set....with the correct socket of course!!!!
