1982 240d standed me again!

Hello every one,

Well I thought I had it working for good not so. I have a 1982 240d, it has 118,000 miles on it. I converted it with an Elsbett kit to run on vegtable oil, I know has left me on the side of the road 5 times. All the problems have been that after 350 miles (250 first couple times) it acts like its starving for fuel and dies I have changed the feul filters twice. The original problem was the tank since all fuel lines have been replaced. First algea showed up in the filters, added some starburst to it and that helped, but then the prefilter was clogged with rust, took out the tank and it was bad, got all the rust out and coated the tank with redcoat, and cleaned the tank filter (wow it was bad). Thought this would solve all my problems. But no dice. Well here are what I think my options are.

1. Vegtable oil not filtered enough, I don't think this is it because I filter it down to 1 micron.
2. Tempurature was colder after it got dark, vegtable oil seemed pretty thick when I poured it in last night and I had been mixing it with deisel but last night it was straight vegtable.
3. Lift pump is working only part of the time and on its way out. How can I test it?
4. Need to do a deisel purge be cause I did notice I was getting bad gas mileage around 17 miles per gallon, and the haven't done one since I got the car, the only thing with this is the car sounds great and the exhaust isn't burning blue or white.

Any ideas?

Try running straight diesel fuel and see what happens.

X2. It's the vegetable oil that's stranding you, not the 240d.

Yep. Score another one for running these engines on a proper fuel.

A 240d running on diesel will go for just short of forever.

car running again

Well, I have had the car running for two weeks now and put on over 500 miles on it, I figured out the problem, I noticed that when I added the veggie oil it was very thick It had been a very cold (michigan) night when it stranded me and I had just gotten too greedy, and filled the tank totally with veggie oil and no diesel, both tanks since then I have made sure to only put in 14 gallons veggie and 3 gallons diesel per tank to make sure it stays thin enough even if it is a cold morning.
