When you get tired of the mules, jump on over to OD and hang out with the asses. Your parent's rules apply there too.

Only 5 ? That's just a good case of the disease. I think when you have 3 of the same model and COLOR, then you have a "bad" case of the disease.

Of course, I might get exempted into the "bad case club", since I paid to have a non running 300SDL parts car transported from near Orlando, FL to Memphis, TN. I really wanted those front seats.

edit --- I just counted the cars in my CURRENT signature. YIKES!!!! Oh, and that doesen't count my diesel truck.

I've been reading and occasionally contributing to this forum for a couple of years now. Couldn't help but notice that many of the members own bunches of these old MB's. One is not enough; they are addicted. Well it rubbed off, just like Mama said it would.
Last weekend my wife and I took a little road trip and were passing through Columbia, TN. Many of you may not know this, but Columbia is the Mule Capital of the World. And last Saturday was 'Mule Day'. Folks came from far and wide to see the mule parades, trade mule accessories, and just have a good time in general. One of the longstanding traditions of Mule Day is that many many folks hold yard sales. You are not out of sight of one yard sale before you see another. As we cruised along, my wife suddenly said "Stop -- turn around now". Being a well trained husband, I did just that and pulled up into a yard sale featuring, among many other things, a beautiful '83 300 SD. Twenty minutes later, we were the proud owners of Mercedes #2. We put $500 down and she picked it up yesterday. Got it home last night and got up this morning and went to work. Will post more about it when I check it out a little better.
At any rate ---- Mama was right. Gee thanks guys (and gals)
Good Husband, John. And I commend you on your choice in the wife category. Hey JimmyL, maybe we need to get a wife like John's. Would I need to move to Utah? (Just kidding, Utah residents).

I was in Nashville last weekend, and found a 190D.....well, sort of; he had a 190D and a 190E....does anyone see where this is going? The 190D was from Vermont with salt rot everywhere, so he pulled the engine and put it in the 190E (Tennessee car -- no rust); all the rest of the spare parts were inside the 190E\D. What was left of the 190D was the body frame with doors still on it; nothing else. Poor rusted, Vermont thing, needed to be put out of its misery.

And of course, we HAVE to see photos. The BEST photo you could post though would be your wife sitting in the driver's seat with a big smile on her face. It was HER find.

Is the car in good condition?

OK, got a bit more time this morning. Here's what little I've learned of the 300SD.

The good
  • great paint and body (assuming no hidden rust lurking under smooth body) No dings
  • drives very nicely (slight play in steering wheel, but not bad)
  • good interior (not perfect but darned good)
  • good rubber
  • good brakes
  • oil filler cap doesn't jiggle when loosened at idle
  • appears to have been very well maintained until recent past
  • power seats are comfy (and pretty)
The not so good
  • odometer doesn't work but shows 309K
  • glow plugs need help - slow to start cold and smokes a bit. Starts great when warm
  • tach doesn't work
  • temp gauge jumps a bit, but engine runs just right temp according to my infrared temp checker
  • rear door locks don't work
  • wood trim around gauge cluster in broken
  • one small crack in dash
  • belt to AC compressor is missing
I shot a few pics this morning, but the car is so shiny that all there's lots of glare. Will try to do better when I have more time. Too, I'm not sure I know how to attach pics here. We'll see. Will surely do better when I have a bit more time.
One more thing --- what are the pump up looking things beside the seats?

When you tackle those glow plugs undo your fuel lines and the line connectors ,they will push up out of the way for easier access to the gp s.Dont go crazy with moving them around though ,the alignment to reinstall can be some trouble .A reemer could come in handy before you start.Nice car, congrats.

With the unknown high mileage the cold start issue could also be something more serious. Looks gorgeous anyway. W126s are starting to give me an itch. Oh dear.

Check the glow plugs.
Tach amp failure, most likely.
Those pump up things may be a lumber support bulb.
A/C may have seized, and tore the belt off, at least that's what happened to mine.

Do you want one with a BIG back seat? It would do you well.

Agreed.....

The only wagon worth any money to me is the '87 300 turbodiesel.
