Although from what I've read since my particular tensioner is the racheting kind, and the spring only provides tension when the enigne is not runing, this isn't necessarily and 'must replace now or await doom' part as if it were the other type. I am putting in a woodruff key, and was told I coulld just take the spring out, don't have to take teh whole tensioner off. But I read another post that I ahve to take eh whole unit apart to release teh spring tension. Correct?

The non-turbo and turbo charged 617s have different spring tensioner setups.

As Mattbob said the ones with the turbo have a spring tensioner set-up with a ratcheting device on the Tensioner Plunger. I have seen several internet sellers selling the spring for the turboed spring tensioner.

For the ones with no turbo I am not sure.

If its a turbo, woldpac has them. I just bought one a couple weeks ago.
Less than $3

And if its a turbo, you just need to pull the plug and the spring comes right out.

To release the rachet tension, the whole part must be removed.

Once removed, the racheting part can be pushed out through the back of the base holder and then be re inserted from the front and no pressure will be on the timing chain until the spring is re-installed. This was one of my first lessons about ten years ago, when I screwed my timing up trying to force my timing chain back in time, even though I had the white paint mark on the chain and sprocket and knew my timing should have been right as it was before, but it just wouldn't go back on until I figured how that rachet tensioner functioned. One other thing, unless it is related to suspension parts, if you have to "force" something on a Daimler car; you are on the wrong trail. Daimler cars are like diamonds. They are very expensive, but like diamonds are very easy to fracture. So, as a general rule; do not force anything. Figure out how it goes properly or invent a new way yourself. But just don't "force" anything.

Actually parts issues are confusing. My confusion over when 300Ds changed the type of Chain Tensioner they used led me to buying the wrong one 2 years ago.
I have a new LASO Timing Chain Tensioner Assy. (Made in Germany) that is for a Non-Turbo 300D. Could not return it as it was an Ebay purchase and my fault I bought the wrong one.
Now I try to be more carful when I look up parts.

Cool thanks guys. So for inserting anew woodruff key for my non turbo, I have to unscrew the back of the chain tensioner. PushThe racheting device out by the guide rail, yank out key, insert new key with the flange facing left, re sinert the racheting device through the timing chain side, tighten sprocket, adjust timing.

Sound right?

I pulled my tensioner out today and found out that two coils in the middle of the tensioner spring were wore down to less then 1/2 of the wire diameter!

I went to Worldpac and it looks like I need to have a re-sale license to register and buy???
