so... the diff is just hanging by it's axles? or is the rear mount attached and the subframe is just resting on the diff... scary.

One picture I saw showed the boot tool installing both boots with only the outboard end of the axle disconnected. Is that not possible on these cars?

Yeesh, missing the studs?
Installing the diff is a work of precision with those 4 studs, you must be absolutely perfectly level across all 4 when lifting into the subframe, or its not going to happen.

also, if you boot on the car, you have to pump in the oil or grease with the boot installed, via a syringe or similar...

Inner Spline Removal Help
I'm having a bit of difficulty sliding out the axle splines from the differential or inner end. Its been a while since I last did this work so I don't if theres a trick to it. I've removed the C-clip and the outer end is also removed from the hub. I've slid the spline out about 1/4" about flush to the gear. I can't pull it out. I tried leveraging the axle can but theres only so much you can do without damaging the can.
Any ideas?

Nothing else keeps it in the diff other than the "C" clips. I recently took two of the annular axles apart apart (waste of time). The hub (without the axle attached), slides right out of the diff, effortlessly. |

thanks Brian. I'll give that a try. Basically lift the axle as I slide it out I guess.

I've used the claw end of a hammer on the lip of the can to gently tap it out if its sticking....

If you simply lift the axle to take the weight off the inner joint, it should slide right out.

Well, this one seems to be a bugger. I was able to pull it out enough to see about 1 cm of the differential spline then thats it. I tap it back in and pull out again but it seems to be stuck at that point.

Godo post. I want to take a look at mine some time. Probably not until spring, but ya never know.
For those doing this, I read that its a good idea to swap sides. This is due to bearing wear. Since they generally move in one direction they wear on one side. Swapping can extend the life of these a lot.
