Well, the 220s chain was stretched 11.5 degrees past 9.5. Buying a new one now.

Is there any way that the idler sprocket bearing is worn causing the slop, or is it always the chain? Kind of wierd that both the chains had the same stretch.

Also, whats the deal with that tensioner? are you supposed to adjust that thing? I took it off and eventually unscrewed it and pulled the piston out. I just stuck it in the other side and screwed it in 4 or 5 threads in. Is it an automatic adjustment that works with the oil pressure?

In theory, one could move the cam sprocket one tooth (9 degrees at the cam), then reduce that as needed with an offset key installed to move the sprocket in the opposite direction. In reality, a new chain would be a much better solution.

You installed the 220s chain in the new engine and it had the same stretch?

If yes, I'd get interested again in confirming the TDC accuracy. The pointer could be bent/wrong/misadjusted, the pulley could be wrong or spun.

I am predicting immenent failure now.

For the amount of time and money he's got in it so far he could have bought and isntalled a 617.952.

I just put the 220 chain in thinking I could bring the timing back somwhere near 9.5 and see if it helped with the smoke. The 220 chain wasn't in great shape though. The master link had grooves on the pins, so it being stretched isnt really impossible.

New chain is on its way. Im not sure if thats going to make the smoke stop though. The 220 ran with this chain, and didnt smoke as bad as this 617 did. But the 220 is 2 degrees advanced from this engine so, maybe thats enough to change from heavy smoke to light smoke?

One more thing. Im thinking of putting the 220s chain tensioner in the 617. I dont think I like the way that ratcheting tensioner works.. would that be a bad idea?
