Can't adjust valves.

Simple as that, i'm using my homemade wrenches but can't loosen the 2 adjusting nuts. What should I try to do before I say F*&K it and put it all back together. Also, is that spring retainer supposed to turn when I try? I think so as there is no tension on the spring.

Thanks.

Are you sure your wrenches aren't too thick and grabbing both the locknut and cap screw at the same time? At the very least you ought to be able to hold the locknut and turn the capscrew to loosen it if the wrenches are thin enough.

Like nhdoc said, you'll have to grind the lower one.

When adjusting the valves, I turn the retainer to find the 'average' clearance. In most cases, the rotation of the valve will result in some degree of 'runout.' This means the clearance will change as you rotate the retainer...Robert

If you give up, take a break, cigarette, coffee or beer make sure you didn't fubar anything before you start it. Make sure nothing is loose, nothing is in there that shoudn't be. Turn the engine over with the nut on the AC pulley or main pulley, in the operating direction (clockwise only facing the engine from the front bumper) and verify there everything is open or closed at the appropriate time.

Some people say they use cone wrenches (from a bike shop) on the locknut. Local bikeshop or performance bicycle or bike trashbar (nashbar.com) would have them.

Well they're done. Thanks for the replies but the problem was one of the wrenches, being I couldn't put enough torque to it. I had to adjust all but 1 or two. Went pretty well actually and fired up GREAT!

Thanks.
the retainer rotates with the valve (ie.. the threads on the valve).

why is there no 'tension' in your spring?
