I've checked in the ATSG manual for you - there's nothing in there (that I can see) that fits your problem.

I don't know about a pendulum, but on my w116 300sd the car had to be absolutely still before it would shift down into first on takeoff.

This was a constant irritant as here in Quebec we tend to follow the "American stop" principle as a religion... and a w116 diesel isn't exactly sprightly in second (well mine wasn't).

From my files, as I was discarding all the old Benz stuff. The 722.120 transmission is shifted to 2nd while sitting at a traffic light by the Overload Protection Switching Unit. The transmission shifts to 1st when the brakes are released. The part number for this device is A0045429917 and on the W116, it's located in the passenger's foot-well area.

I hope this helps those who have reached out for help recently...
