Power Steering Line Torque
Hello,
I am reinstalling my power steering pump on my 95 E300 Diesel, and the procedure in the FSM I have on CD-ROM seems to be at odds with what I have under the hood. The FSM describes four lines in this procedure: a "high pressure expanding hose" and "return line" going into the power steering pump, and a "high pressure hose" and "return hose" going into the "tandem pump". The FSM gives torque specifications for three of these lines: 45-50 NM for the high pressure expanding hose, 25 NM for the high pressure hose going to the tandem pump, and 40 NM for the return line. There is not a torque spec given for return line to the tandem pump, and a clamp is indicated as being required to reconnect this line. I have uploaded an image of my pump, and I hope it is visable to all of you. As you can (hopefully) see, my pump only has two lines: a return line on top and a high pressure line below it. From the diagram in the FSM it looks like I have the 40 NM return line and the 25 NM high pressure hose attached to the tandem pump, but I think it is strange that the high pressure line would have a lower torque spec than that of the return line. Anyone have any idea of what torque to use on these lines? Do I even have a tandem pump, or just a power steering pump? Is there any way to tell if a high pressure hose is of the expanding variety? Thanks. Note: The hose coming from the lower right corner of the picture goes to the A/C compressor below the P/S unit, even though it looks like it connects to the rear of the P/S unit in the picture.

Power Steering Pump (ONLY)
'Picture you provide is of a Power Steering Pump.
(So called Tandem Pump setup is apparently for "Self Leveling" Chassis) As you will notice both your High and Low pressure lines connect to the Pump with Hexagonal fittings which should be torqued to the specs provided for the Power Steering Pump. The W124 FSM on CDs throws everything (AND the Kitchen Sink) into one great pool of information...It be a "Chore" sometimes Identifying your car's individual specs!
