Steering box slack?

The car, 1984 300D Turbo.
I have set the adjustment in the steering box a year ago, and a year before that. Now I have to take up the slack again. Before you ask. Yes it turns CC to tighten. The lower and upper support joints are new within two years and other motion points have been checked and are snug.
Can anyone tell me where does the adjustment go?
Can the gears be wearing that fast?
What am I missing here.

On my 116.120 it is CCW to reduce slack in the steering gear...Robert

It is CCW to tighten, I doubt the gears are going that fast, it's kinda scary that they could be though.

Reckon that "CC" is shorthand for "CCW?"

Well, yes they can go pretty bad quite fast, after setting CCW to tighten they loosen up a few moths later, the worm drive or whatever is in there gets worn.
I had no luck with one in my old '83 300D so finally found a low mileage one in a wrecking yard that fixed it up and it held for fine

I have found that there is plenty of adjustment in the box. My 123 with well over 300K on the box steers so tightly its a little too sensitive. I don't know what your problem is but I'd just keep adjusting it til it won't adjust any more and not worry about it.

How do you know when it won't adjust anymore?
Does it hit a stop?

The spec calls for up to 25mm of free play as measured from the outside of the steering wheel. If you adjust it so there is less than 15-20mm of free play it WILL wear faster. People think there should be little or no free play but the fact is there is some designed into it. I don't have the shop manual in front of me but I recall the minimum is either 15 or 20mm.
