Why Different Oil Capacities?

I now have a 91 and a 92 300D. Both have the 602.962 engine. Why do they, according to the manuals, have differing engine oil refill capacities? For the 91, it says 7.9 quarts; for the 92, it says 7.4 quarts. Both are with filter change.

Just curious.

there was a TSB on the subject. The lower number is an updated quantity.

search for a technical service bulletin by MB, you should find it within a short time.

Probably the oil level was a bit too high in practical usage and was hitting the spinning rods a bit too much.

But are the marks on the dip sticks correct or the same?

Sounds like the earlier cars as mentioned above it will be a half quart off, so you would need to run it in the middle between the high and low marks.

I know that the 603 engines are very sensitive to oil levels. When I had my 350sdl once I overfilled it a half quart or so. On a 617 this would not be an issue.

On the 603 with it at that level I found that on a trip if I drove my normal speed the engine temp started going up but if I slowed down it stabilized. When I got home I drained out a bit to get the level down where it belonged.

I figured they reduced the clearance between pan oil level and the crank to squeeze the hood line down as much as possible in the 60_ series engines.
