bad to leave car without oil?

i was replacing my oil pan gasket, tightened down too hard and broke it! now i'm going to have to wait a week for a new one since i can't find one around here. is it ok to leave the car without oil in it for a week or so?

It will be fine - as long as you don't forget there's no oil in the sump and then try to start it!

Indeed. Unless it is turning, the engine gets little advantage from having oil in the pan.

I usually disconnect something electrical when leaving a car without oil for a period of time, to disable the starter or ignition (on a gasser).

I had a 18 wheel truck tire fly apart in front of me on interstate in my jetta back couple years ago 1000$ to fix broke a plastic support and since they cant really weld plastic they quoted new bumper and paint.

Well when i bought new car they doubled my insurance since i had a "at fault" wreck took 3 yrs ended up costing me about 4K dollars just in hike in insurance so just depends.

My cell phone bill went to $300 one month. I called them and gave a WTF notice... They added an extra zero for no apparent reason.

What the HECK does that have to do with leaving the car without oil???

Just leave the pan in place to prevent dust, lint, etc from getting on the parts and sticking. Especially if someone is running the leaf blower on the concrete next to the car (don't ask!).

If you have any poor memory issues (like I do) or someone else in the Family the might try to drive the car tape a note on the Steering Whee- Do Not Start, No Oil.

Unhooking the battery and leaving a large note would be a great plan IMHO.

In calif. that note would have to be in 14 languages to be politicaly correct .

Oil in the pan, or no oil in the pan makes no difference. only makes a difference when the engine is started. OIL= Happy engine. NO OIL= UNHAPPY engine

There will still be XXX amount of oil clinging to the mechanical parts of the engine whether there is oil in the pan or not.

If there are multiple drivers you could have issues, some one my not get the word or forget. A note on the steering wheel will be helpful, but it could get knocked off and or the tape will not hold.

Disconnecting the battery ground is good, maybe remove it. or not sure, but maybe removing one of the wires going to the black box next to the battery.

If you are the only driver, you could get a brain cramp and absently minded start the engine. what ever will go wrong, will.

I screw up now and then, and Iam the only one on the project .

Sorry, I had to

To answer the question, I can't think of there being any issues for letting it sit, you should be ok. When I first read it I thought you mean driving it with no oil...in which case you wouldn't be driving it very far.

Yes this would be the best possible solution. no juice = no crank

but then I could hurt my self pulling, lifting, sliding, pushing that big ol heavy battery. .
