What!? Remove the Bumper to Get the Radiator Out?

On W201.126 - OM602.911 the FSM says it is necessary to pull the bumper off to be able to remove the A/C evaporator from the radiator. Tell me this is not so.

I was just under there - unfortunately I believe it may be true. Should I worry about airbag switches or what not? The battery is disconnected of course.

That is a crappy design! On the airbag-equipped cars I spend time under, I always unhook the negative battery cable and cycle the ignition once to get any residual power out of the systems before working.

Got it out - bumper removal not necessary - nor A/C evaporator. Two clips, transmission fluid lines, two radiator hoses and the finesse of Baryshnikov to get it past the fan without mashing the fins (18mm clearance between fan and radiator and I have the sliced knuckle-flesh to prove it). Had to improvise to clamp off the transmission fluid lines.
