ODOMETER GEAR PROBLEMS - HELP!
I recently bought a speedometer unit for my '84 300SD. Installed it this morning. Speed works but no mileage. Took it out and saw 2 gears were broken. The little one and the outside large black one.

Tried cleaning big gear for part number, and it crumbled. Here's a photo of the one currently in the car. http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c82/RedRyan66/?action=view¤t=Presvisit105.jpg" target="_blank">http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c82/RedRyan66/Presvisit105.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"> Anybody know where to get replacement gears? --------------------- 1984 MB 300SD Turbo |

Try here. http://www.odometergears.com/mercedes.html
They should have what you need. I'm having problems too but nothing is broken. That setup looks similar to my old Volvo 850. That is pretty easy to work on.

I've had the same problem the last few weeks. You might be able to find those gears at the junkyard in any w126 or in some BMW's but it is very difficult to get the small gear off the shaft without breaking it.

I have pulled many an SD speedo/odo to look for those gears. Most are already broken, and the ones that aren't usually disintegrate upon removal, especially the small one.
I bought my gears form the folks linked above. You need to get all 3 as they are very soft. I believe it was about $75 bucks with shipping. That is just how much it costs. You also need to count the teeth. Believe it or not, mine were for my '81 wagon, W123 chassis. A one year/one model only application to W123's......

Great information. Thanks all.
One thing. The small gear fell apart, leaving a brass sleeve on the shaft. Must this be removed ( how ) or does the new gear get glued onto it? I took speedo #2 apart to count teeth. --------------------- 1984 MB 300SD Turbo |

You must remove the sleeve.
Here is a little tutorial: http://www.odometergears.com/subpages/List_of_common_solutions.html
