transplant into a gasser
I am sure this has been talked about before, I will do a search when I have more time.
There is a beautiful 300SE with a "bad engine" for sale locally. The price is great. I happen to have a rusted out 300SD that runs like a top. I have been looking for a 300SD/SDL to replace my rust bucket. How easy is it to swap engines? Do transmissions need switched? How bout rear ends? Could a former HUMVEE mechanic and helicopter mechanic do this swap in a day? Thanks |

The same years and body style?
Since you will need to swap the rear end and speedo too, and I am not sure about the fuel line setup and depending on the year, perhaps some engine managment electrical stuff, its not likely to be doable in a day.

Probably a 380SE then, with a V8, and not the 300SE with the I6?

Ive done the swap 3 times now, I could do it with an assitant in 20 hours. Yes you have to change the transmission, Electical is very easy, if you dont care about the tach, Ive never tried to get the stock tach working. Fuel tank is the same, just need to make a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter to bypass the fuel pump.
you will probably have to change the driveshaft yolk on the transmission which requires a rare socket, 30 or 31 mm deep shaft 12 point. Rear end stays in, Exhaust is simple. Changing the ignition switch is pretty straightforward but if you havent done it before it will take some time. There is not really complicated bits it just takes time. The hardest swap I tried was an 85 300 SD motor, and 240D 4spd man, into my 84 500 sec, it required a bunch of custom work, I put an 83 300 SD into an 85 500 SEL and it was straightforward.

remove the engine and trans, rip all the 300se engine stuff out of the car, put in the special diesel things (bigger battery tray, different heater hoses, vacuum lines, wiring, gp's) and put the engine and transmission in coupled. You may need a 300sd driveshaft. The shifter linkages will have to be swapped over probably. Also the throttle setup. speedometer should be compatible if their both w126 transmissions
