I'm fairly experienced but I also rely on this car for work. I put 7-800 miles a week on it so I would only have two to three days in a row to get it all going.

I did remove the valve cover to take a gander at the chain and cam sprocket the other day.

Should I be able to deflect the chain any? I could do so on the driver side of the cam sprocket before the plastic guide.

I checked the teeth for wear and I did see a few very small "nicks" on a few of the teeth but nothing that looked drastic to my untrained eye. I also didn't see any that had broken off.

I did notice shiny polishing on the links themselves where they engage the sprocket teeth.

I still haven't checked for stretch but I hope to do that tomorrow.

I also bought the FSM cd just now that was recommended above.

I checked the specs and I should be getting, at least if it were new, 26 city mpg and 33 highway.

I'm not.

I'm also using a little oil.

The best mpg I've measured on this car is 29 that was almost all highway. Yesterday I filled up after putting about 300 highway and 100 city and I got just over 27 mpg. However, I had doped the fuel with a very heavy dose of Startron tank cleaner and I was testing out the K&N air filter I bought(without consulting anybody) for most of that tank. The engine actually died within 45 seconds the first time I started it with the K&N installed.

Something is missing from the cruise control, previous owner says it's a rod missing, so it doesn't work. It actually will engage when I hit the lever but it only holds for a fraction of a second. So, I don't use it and often my MPH fluctuates if you know what I mean.

I try to keep it between 70-75 but it really is windy here and it never is right behind you. It's also quite hilly in spots along my routes.

The odometer reads just over 208K now and has very little if any blowby.

I have noticed something leaking out of the bottom of the IP. It just looks a little wet and grimy.

I also noticed that I have oil leaking from the EGR. Not a lot, but enough to notice.

It also shifts very harshly when I give it plenty of pedal. It really shifts like a punch in the back sometimes.

Is this potentially causing damage to my rear end or flex discs? I haven't checked the flex discs yet but I hope to soon and also replace the oil in the rear differential.

These are all the problems/symptoms I have noticed thus far.

If any of these could be affecting my MPG that could explain my low numbers.

I really need to check the chain tomorrow so I can rule that out or move forward with the repair.

Throw the Damn K+N filter away ! It will allow DIRT and GRIT into your Engine !

Your OLD MB filter can be GENTLY blown out (In Reverse) [Less than 10 PSI]

Also the MB type filter provides the Proper Air Flow and Better Filtration !

Chain wear measurement is a function of MEASUREMENT of/at specified Points.
(You Ain't Gonna measure ANY chain by the "Belt" deflection method!)

Do Not load yourself up with all the Little Quirks,Focus on the Major Items.
If you tackle one "Problem" a fortnight, you'll be amazed that You're driving
a Practically New MB in no time. (Little Bites)

I agree with JONL the front timing cover may equate with an engine rebuild
in difficulty...BUT if you go through ALL the trouble to R+R the TC ,YOU
KNOW YOU'LL slap a new CS sprocket (AND OIL PUMP SYSTEM Chain
AND sprockets) on ! [Which brings us back to Oil Pan Removal!]

I did replace the K&N today.

I also cleaned out the air box and it's drain tube.

It was full of sand and dirt that kept recirculating in the box.

The previous owner worked cattle in this car on muddy roads.

The transmission has mud caked on it.

There was grass, sticks and an inch of dirt/sand in the air box when I replaced the air filter and I noticed that under the plastic underbody aero work there is untold amounts of dried mud.

I plan on servicing the tranny and replacing diff fluid soon as well.

I wish that were true for me... It seems that every time I finish tackling things, new ones pop up to keep me busy. At least lately they've all been "Little Quirks."

I guess that explains my relentless obsession to stamp out all the "Little Quirks."

I just checked the timing chain today and I even had a new TC on hand and a new valve cover gasket as well.

I checked it about eight times.

It seemed to get closer and closer to 0 degrees every time.

The first time was about 2 or 3 off.

Then as I continued I got very, very anal about lining up these two marks.

The way I was doing it was to close one eye(the non-dominant one) and line it up as if looking down the barrel of a rifle until it was pointed right at the mark on the cam tower.

As I did this I never got anything more than a fraction of a degree of stretch/wear.

It seems that somebody has done some preventative maintenance on this car.

I am beginning to think my low MPG might be related to my lead foot.

I don't have excessive oil consumption.(less than a quart in 4K miles)

What oil loss I am experiencing I am pretty sure is leaving the valve cover, and getting circulated back into the intake since it's coated in oil now that I have the turbo working properly.

I also have noticed some oil leaking from the flapper valve shaft after I removed the actuator and did the pressure wastegate turbo mod.

There are a few drops here and there in the engine compartment.

How serious is it for the protective "foil" on the hood over the turbo to be intact?

In my travails of finding an appropriate plug for the EGR pipe that comes from the exhaust manifold I superheated and blew the protective foil off the hood.

Is there a replacement for this that has more sturdy foam that will take the appropriate adhesive?

How did the timing chain replacement work out? Did you decide you didn't need it?

I didn't need it, thankfully, according to what I discovered when I checked it for wear.

I just got some new tires and I think that my previous set, while worn almost bald, had a high rolling resistance even new based on some reviews I read on them at the tire rack. They were the tires that came on the car and I wore them out in 15K miles. They were also only rated for 40K.

I have ordered some new pressure valve seals and I am going to re-do the delivery valve o-rings and pressure seals on the IP as soon as I get the seals in the mail.

I suspect my rough running and lower than expected fuel economy has to do with incorrectly installed pressure valve seals(over-torqued and re-used seals).

I also think that my fuel economy numbers are surely affected by my lead foot and the tires I had on it until today. They were very loud and stiff.

They also reduced another reviewer's MPG by 10% when he installed them new. This is according to the tirerack.com review on the tire I read.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't recommend Fuzion HRi's for this car. They are apparently a high performance tire with a puny 40K treadwear warranty and very high rolling resistance.

I replaced them with some General Altimax HP's that are a grand touring tire that got very high marks from every Mercedes Benz reviewer. They said the tire finally made their Benz ride like a Benz.

We'll see.

I drive lots of miles(about 1K a week) and it's all highway so I won't be needing any real performance aspects in a tire.

Now I think I might need motor mounts, shocks and struts and I know I need to replace my rubber brake lines.

Man, what would I do with myself if not for car maintenance.....
