I can say for certain that I'm smelling some emission from the AC system. It may not be from the r134 but it may be the oil or something else in the system. It's a definate "artificial" smell and it follows closely behind recharging the system.
If I let the system get low or run out completely, the smell goes away. As soon as I recharge it, I get the same distinctive odor the morning after when the air in the car has been still for a period of hours. I'm at odds about whether to use the leak stopper you suggested above or just tear the whole thing apart and either TIG weld it back up or simply replace it. I always try to do the job "right"...
