Can you check steering box play at the bone yard?
My current steering box has a lot of play in it, and I've already adjusted about as far as it can go with out making any noise. I'm going to go looking for a used one. I can easily wiggle the shaft connected to the steering wheel. Will a good steering box have a certain feel on the shaft when you check for play? Any special tools for removal? Thanks

17mm bolts IIRC. You'll need lots of leverage and a can of penetrating degreaser that'll help break the bolts free. Maybe a rubber mallet.

and a pickle fork on the Pitman arm?

Yes you can check it at the yard. Stand where you can see the wheel and move the steering wheel back and forth to check for free play. Then look at the adjustment bolt on the box and count the exposed threads and compare to how many threads are showing on your present box. These boxes are extremely long lived.

There is a way to check. Frist roughly center the gearbox. Remove the 12mm bolt on the case buy the pitman shaft, install the center lock tool and slightly move the wheel back and forth. This may sound simple, but done incorrectly will damage the gearbox if turned to far and the locking tool is broken off in the box. Also the piston will be moving the reaction valve in the box, so it is a judgement call on what is valve movement and what is play. If you do a advanced search for threads I've posted as, "thegearboxguy" there's one that may help you. If you have any question feel free to call 702.734.8090
