Whats the difference between a 1984 300td transmision and a 1985 300td transmission

I own a 1984 300td that has some transmission problems. I recently found a 1985 300td transmission that is in very good shape and being sold at a reasonable price. Does anyone know if the 85 tran will work with my 84 engine.

Thanks
Dan

Others have said I am wrong in thinking the following but I'm pretty sure I read it in a shop manual somewhere. The 85 TD has an electronic rack position sensor. This information is fed to the transmission to use in the control of shifts. I'm pretty sure the 84 lacks the rack position sensor.
Take this for what it's worth. My memory is not all that reliable. Others say the rack position sensor only factors into computer control of the EGR.

Not sure about what Kerry says ( I, for one never heard of it) , but the 85 transmission is a 722.4xx whereas the 84 is a 722.315. Make sure you get the torque converter with it. A lot of the vacuum controls are different as well, so get those too.

I believe the '84 is a stronger unit than the '85.....

yep, the 84 is rated for higher power, but the 85 has a better TC.
