Better MPG/more power????
I am wanting to get both if possible. I drive a 130 mile commute 5 days a week. Currently my 1971 220D is all original..non turbo... oil bath air cleaner. I was thinking about going to a Cold air intake(or??) and was going to start some research on turbos. I am all ears for any suggestions.
Thanks |

Just the facts, maam.
This is your problem: 1971 220D
That engine only has about 45hp and nothing worth doing will ever change it significantly. Your options are 1) enjoy the scenery at a the slow, stately pace afforded by a 220 2) get a 300D with a turbodiesel and enjoy the scenery at a slightly more brisk pace 3) buy a gasser. PS: Oh, I just noticed your location....you could also move closer to sea level.

I love the car, have had it 11 years now. I just want to get a little more from it. Going slow is not an issue as much as I would like better MPG's

You can not wring blood out of a turnip.
It just does not have it to give.... Listen to RLeo ....

there isn't much you can do. Other than make sure you have done all the required services.

Ditching the oil bath for a paper filter may help. I'm not sure how much of a restriction that is though. What is your current MPG?

That oil bath filter may be why it is still alive in the first place...
A properly maintained oil bath will catch Smaller particles than any paper filter.. its just the physics of the design that is great... I really doubt that a paper filter will have less air flow restriction also.. or that air flow restriction is the cause of your lack of power.

Currently I am getting 23 - 25 MPG (but I also have a roof rack and often a bike up top). I want to see if I can get around 30... if possible...

I'll get the specs for you. I'll let you know tonight.
Adjusting the valves will improve your HP and MPG.

Remove the seats and bumpers, drill 1" holes randomly throughout the car (leave the engine etc. alone)....
Seriously- do you have synthetic in your gearbox and rear end?- that may help just a bit...tire pressure....

In prime new condition it only had a limited number of horsepower...
How about an engine rebuild to get it back to original ?
