Be careful with the local fellow as well. A "reman" could be new bearings, new brushes, and a new regulator with no test of the armature for breakdown of the insulation. I'm making the assumption that Bosch would perform this test and discard any armature that doesn't pass such a test, but I don't honestly know. |

I was at the shop a few days ago to replace the starter on my 82 300D turbo.
My service crew is the famous Mr MB Motors team, also known as Enrique, here North of L.A. What happened, the upper bolt didn't want to come out The problem with the starter occures usually during the "Hot Season", when I can't restart the vehicle before a certain cool-off time. Any ideas? I could just drive it during the cool season, but that doesn't sound like a genius idea, neither does taking out the engine ...

I don't think so, or let's say I hope not. Enrique is not that kind of mechanic. He is over cautious.
He showed me the universal joint that snapped. They also removed the allen socket with an extra long "screw driver" from the bolt, meaning it must have been all the way in there. But mostly, they did a final attempt when I was watching. The extension sticking out between the exhaust pipe and whatelse, trying with a torque wrench to break it open. No movement, except the flex of the long extension. With any more force, I suppose it would have snapped another uni joint. All the torque energy goes lost in the long extension and the joint. I was thinking about heating. I'm sure he knows that kind of procedure. The shop was busy last Thursday. They had already spent 50 minutes on it, without success. So we decided to leave it and get back at it another time. He also wanted to see with the Snapon tool truck if he can get another tool. If nothing else, I keep driving as it is, trying to stay out of the heat. I will mention the heating option when I talk to him the next time.

If he's using 1/2" extensions and a 1/2" joint, they have far more capability than the screw and nothing is lost. If they are using 3/8" extensions and a 3/8" joint, you'd better find another mechanic. Pay attention to the temperature that I noted above. Any cooler and it won't be successful. Any hotter and the screw will temper and soften. You need an IR gun. |

Using a 1/2" wobble extenstion will also transfer more torque. The pilot of DFW has introduced me to this one. His MB mech's depend on this.

Well, I talked to Enrique today and he assured me that nothing happened to the bolt/head. No stripping or damage has occured.
He doesn't have a oxygen torch at the shop, so he can't heat the bolt. I'll have to go on a search for a reliable mechanic to crack this nut. On the other hand, the starter only acts up during the peak summer season or lenghty drives with brief stops. Maybe I can work around it somehow, but I am sure it'll get me some day. It reminds me of my '78 Scout II. It had a similar issue with the starter. The starter stayed in the truck until the bitter end and never really caused serious problems, except a few delays, here and there.

Get a propane torch with some Mapp gas and use the IR gun as I mentioned above. Sometimes these guys are clueless. |

Make sure it's 1/2 universal that is being used. Use an impact universal if necessary. When I did mine it took a hell of a lot of torque to break it free. I can't remember if I used a universal or a wobble. I do remember thinking that something was going to break before it came loose.
Why are these bolts so tight? At least one person has cut a hole in the firewall to get better access to that bolt.
