That does look like a very nice one, though. One of my neighbors has one that looks just like that. He sometimes waves at me as I drive by his house in my 240d at stately, "parade like" speeds.

If the 350 engine is so fragile, why not replace it with the 300sdl engine, or even an OM617 from a 300SD?

Are there that many differences between an '88 300SDL and a '91 350SDL?

Did you replace everything but sheet metal?

Yeah, thanks for asking that question. HE SCARED ME!

Also, in regards to the 350SDLs getting harder to find. Considering their low production numbers, I come across a lot of them for sale. Half of them must change hands each year.

That's my understanding. The OM617 5cyl 300SDs seem to be the most durable. The 86 through 90 6 cyl diesels in the 300SDLs and w124, such as the 1987 Wagon are supposed to be ok.

I remembered seeing a list of good vs. bad diesels, which I thought was on this site, but it was somewhere else.

BUY LIST

240D non-turbo
300D non-turbo
300CD non-turbo
300TD non-turbo (were the T is desinating wagon)

81-85 300sd turbo
86-87 300sdl turbo

87 300d/300TD turbo (were the T is desinating wagon)

94-95 e300 non-turbo

96-97 e300 non-turbo
98-99 e300 turbo

84-85 190d 2.2 non-turbo
86-89 190d 2.5 non-turbo
87 190d 2.5 turbo

Avoid List

90-91 350sd/sdl turbo
92-95 300sd or S350 turbo

I don't necessarily believe their list, however.

Notable missing models, include:
81-85 w123 300d turbos and the 300CD turbos. (Which are one of best diesels for collectability.)

Here's where I obtained the list:
