Lightbulb Built Another 300 SDC today

My good friend and I built another 300 SDC today for him, the donor car was an 83 300 SD, and the recipiant was an 1983 380 SEC. Pics will come when the car gets painted. Overall the removal of the 380 was very straightforward, and the install of the Om617 was very smooth. We used the 380 SEC driveshaft. We didnt bother firing the engine as we needed a new ingition switch, and a new waterpump and fluids.

The wiring for the 300 SD is quite simple, Oil pressure, Water temp, fan switch, and glow plugs. We got it done in about 10 hours, but alot of the prep work had been done. (wiring removed and labled) 300 SD drivetrain removed.

We could have done if faster if the ignition switch wasnt broken.

Let me know if you have any specific question and ill try to answer them.

This 300 SDC is for my buddy, hes giving me another 500 SEC cheap for my own uses...

Have you ever put an om617 into a Landcruiser?
I have an 84 that just cries out for diesel.

Screw the paint! Lets see some pics!

What is the difference in weight between those 2 cars? I have forgotten. That sounds like a great swap. The SEC is pretty aerodynamic.

I remember seeing someone somewhere doing this swap before. I just cannot remember where I saw it.

Yep.. One of my buddies in the Air Force (years ago) had a 198X pickup with a little turbo diesel. Nice little truck.

I think the diesel landcruisers are about as rare as the pickups. Isuzu was putting diesels in their pickups and troopers back then as well.

Yes they are rare. A lot of the Toyota and Nissan diesel pick ups ended up in Central America. I had a hard time buying one back in the mid/late 80's because I was competing against those Central American buyers.
There still could be a chance of locating a good used diesel engine from those used Japanese engine places. The Landcruisers used a 6 cylinder turbo diesel though.
Excuse the hi-jack.

Honestly the car is totally stripped and preped for paint, It wouldn't look like much right now. The person you remember doing this swap before was me. This is my second SDC conversion. there are some pics posted of my first swap, Ill take some more photos.

All i'll say about the swap is that a OM617 and 4spd manual weigh less than the M117 and auto, as my car sits higher, after the swap. I average 32 MPG with the engine as it is now. So I traded speed for economy.

Sorry I have 2 diesel landcruisers (and have had more) The toyota engines are easy to work on and very reliable, So I have not needed to put a mercedes diesel into one of them. There is a company that sells an adapter. Search for posts started by me "Icefire" and you will see the post for the company Its not a bolt in swap as you have to change your transmission.

This is my second attempt. The first OM617 ran away on me and I let it run until it threw a couple of rods out the side of the block and stopped. The good thing was that I had already spent the time to fabricate most of the modifications that are necessary like the extention of the drive shaft, modifications to motor mounts, modifications to the accelerator shaft, modification to radiator holder and battery cable. The car runs and drives fine. I have a few electrical issues and a lot of ironing out the kinks left like getting my lights to stop flashing when I insert fuse #15 and get the temp gauge to work and get the SRS light to go out, but overall the OM617 will work in the 300SDL. However it runs much louder than I'm used to hearing a SDL run. Also, it took me way more than 10 hours though, WAY more.

Interesting, the 380 is the same length as the om617. That is very interesting.
