Just pulled my cluster out. The E1 gear was kaput. New one ordered and on the way.

This thread was timely and helpful!

I would be worried about the other two now. Jeff has told me that sometimes the new E1 gear will chew up the others because of their age.

Good point and good advice, thanks. I realize that too, but i looked for rounding and chipping on the other gears and found nothing. The E1 gear was disintegrated, but the others look intact and strong. Its an easy fix, so if I have to redo it, so be it but those gears are too damned expensive. $25++ for the E1 is a bit nuts. I'd love to hear the justification on the cost of that one.

I hear ya. I know Jeff's story, and why they cost so much on his end. The E1 gear is a piece of work. IDK why that one is made of a different plastic.

Sure enough, after a recent big trip the odometer stopped working. Now the E2 Gear is missing enough teeth to stop counting miles.

Time for the E3 tooth count and a new order of E2 and E3.

Odometer gears told me to use heavy grease on the teeth to cut down on the noise that they make below 45 MPH. Might save you from pulling the cluster again if the noise bothers you. They also told me that they thought that they had the noise problem fixed but not on the two sets I have gotten from them.
