The FlY
I got my first one attached to a 309d Euro cab and chassis truck that had a 90 hp 616 in it -lucked into it crusin craigslist-diesel benz., I bought it to snag the 5 speed out of and then cannabalize--See winmutt's monarch moterome thread,im posting pics in an hr or two. Anyway I was pullin the tranz back from the motor and about pissed on myself---THE FRIGGIN 616 HAD A 617 FLYWLEEL AS WELL! So it is also a 616 TRUCK flywheel also-probably a gwagon also with the 616 but I dont know for sure. then a couple of months ago I spotted the gwagon guy in Germany posting that flywheel and put it off til i spotted lietuviei 's thread and went ahead and snagged another, The guy has another posted right now.

A comparison of the 617 and 616 flywheels. The 617 flywheel is on the left

Yes the 616 flywheel is from a 240D.

Don't worry about the balancing process, there'll be plenty of meat left when they are done. OH, and if you're original flywheel is not neutral you put the new one on in the same position.

I match balanced to my 240d flywheel to my auto trans flexplate and my engine does not vibrate at all, it is very smooth. the vibration I have is lugging under heavy load in 3rd gear. it is only at around 1700. if it was a flywheel mismatch balance issue it would get worse with RPM. that said, my flexplate was off by 20 grams, which is qty2 3/8 diameter x 3/8 deep holes drilled on the outer edge. when I put in my 300D flywheel and 5 speed, I will match the 300 flywheel to my flexplate again.

You only need to match the flywheel that was on the engine to the new one. Clutch components will always be neutral. Balancing all those components will be throwing your money away.

They "should" be neutral anyway.

clutch
Im planning on using a 240d clutch from ebay, I cant justify shipping a gwagon one from Germany. Something else interesting, I didnt think a 9" diameter clutch would be appropriate for a big truck like the 309d that was used for a small car transporter-or whatever that might be going down steep grades sometimes, mine had two discs in the clutch--I dont know enough about clutches to lnow if thats like doubling the clutch surface size.

it is. It is commonly used for high performance or truck motors, twice the holding power and not too hard to push in.

Have you ever seen one that required balancing?
I have not.
