no 4th gear - 93 300D 2.5
Sounds like trouble brewing. My 93 300D 2.5 turbo had developed an issue over the last week or so......once warmed up it intermittently will not shift into 4th gear, even if it is revved up (2-4K rpm) and I let completely off the gas. it seems like it will only shift into 4th if i am very very light on the gas. the transmission oil and filter were changed about 5K ago. I plan to do it all again this weekend. AT fluid level is right where it should be.
Some clues: 1st, I am not sure what it is, but the vacuum module near the radiator reservoir (black round thing, with two vacuum lines in and out marked 'out' and vacuum' is making a ticking/clicking noise for which i never noticed before (likely never focused there though). 2nd, there was a vacuum line that was disconnected from a Y union that came off the above module. The other end of line had what appeared like a clear plastic fuel filter connected to it near the battery. there was nothing on the other end of the filter, so perhaps it was an air intake filter? i of course reattached it, but it may no difference. perhaps i sucked something up in the line and clogged or damaged something downline. what is that filter? |

The first things I'd check is for a binding "bowden cable" / kickdown cable, and try unplugging the kickdown switch under the gas pedal. If unplugging the switch helps then it's a stuck switch.

could the switch stick even if i never come close to applying enough pedal to engage the kickdown? it will shift fine, then at the first stop light it will cease shifting into 4th.

i just unplugged the kick down switch and took it for a drive....no luck, still no 4th gear.
is it likely a vacuum or actual transmission issue, anyone care to guess? |

would a poorly adjusted bowden cable prevent the 3-to-4 shift even if the car were at the proper speed range for the shift and i completely backed off the throttle and allowed the car to idle/coast at the proper speed????

If it is the bowden cable, you should be shifting late 1-2 and 2-3 as well as the 3-4 shift which IIRC won't happen until around 80mph.
If the other shifts are normal, probably not a bowden cable sticking, but so far it sounds likely. Oh, and I'm thinking sticking, not just adjustment. Be sure the cable slides properly.

Jeff,
thanks for your help. unfortunately, the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are OK and in fact are happening quicker (low rpm) rather than later (high rpm). |

Then it's beyond my knowledge, sorry.

OK, so i did a test to and from work last evening and this morning. the car shifts fine until it is completely warmed up, say 10 minutes. once at operating temperature, i cannot get 4th gear if i am giving anything more than minimal throttle once in 3rd gear. If i give minimal throttle (i.e., shift into 4th at say 1500-1700 rpm), it will shift into 4th every time. if i give it some gas (say like it would normally shift into 4th at 2000+rpm), then it will never ever go into 4th until i come to start and start all over again in 1st.
Does the ATF expand that much that it will run fine when cold but not when hot? why would higher pressure prevent the 3-4 shift? |

Did you figure this problem out?
